“No. Yes. Ugh, I don’t know, okay? I haven’t felt like that since my crush on Ripley, and if I’m being honest, running into Shade felt likemoresomehow. She was magnetic, and I wanted to follow her… Why are you all looking at me like that?” I ask, narrowing my eyes at my three alphas.

“I guess we’re just a little surprised, is all. You’ve been in love with Ripley since we met you, but I don’t think we’ve ever actually heard you talk about her like you’re talking about a random omega that you ran into just once,” Sasha says, her blue eyes intent on me.

“There was just something about her, Sash. She’s bold, and she smells like candy, and her eyes are the prettiest I think I’ve ever seen. I barely know anything about her at all, but the thought of her using a heat service or being left wanting has me yearning to storm back to her place and demand she let me in. There’s this urge to know she’s taken care of in the back of my mind…” I trail off, getting quiet as we all sit in stunned silence for a few moments.

Something deep inside of me says that Shade is mine. Or she could be.

We could belong to each other.

Isn’t this what Ripley had said she felt when she met River? That an essential part of her recognized him as hers?

The thought of random alphas helping Shade through her heat makes my blood boil and has a growl wanting to push free from my throat.

The only alphas I want to see taking care of her aremine.

My alphas can care for her and ease her through the heat, and I can be there to help. They’ll listen to her, pay attention to her needs and desires.

I’m feeling a little irrational the more I think about random alphas going into her space and taking care of her. Which is ironic because I’m a random omega she ran into just hours ago.

What makes me different from alphas sent from the Center other than the fact that I can guarantee her safety and wellbeing with us?

Suddenly, I want to call her just to check on her, but I can’t because she didn’t give me her number.

Fuck.

What is up with me?

“Gabriel, I think we may need to discuss what you’re wanting here,” Rhett finally says, his dark eyes soft on mine.

I look at each of them, all of their faces understanding and patient.

This is why I love them so damn much.

They’re my alphas, my sounding boards, but they’re also my safety. The ones that understand me better than anyone else, and who don’t fault me for who I am. Or my attractions.

Not that there have been many. Just Ripley. And now, Shade.

Except this attraction to Shade is so different to how I thought I felt about Ripley.

That was just a crush, because she’s a beautiful human both inside and out, and one of the best omegas I know. But after this morning, I can see the stark difference between a crush and this all-encompassing, burning need to be near someone. It’s like meeting my alphas all over again.

I want to get to know Shade. Really know her. To share my alphas and my home with her. My nest. I want to be hers and her mine.

It’s illogical.

One chance encounter and I can envision her here with us all. I can picture a life where she’s in it and our pack is whole—the family I always yearned for growing up.

“How would you all feel about another omega coming into the pack?” I ask, biting my cheek.

“When you say that, what exactly do you mean?” Jordan asks.

“I mean… I think I really want to see if there’s something there with Shade, if she’s open to it. If she calls, of course. I’m saying I want to see if she’s meant for me. Forus.I don’t want just any alphas taking care of her. I wantmyalphas to care for her.”

“Gabe…” Sasha trails off hesitantly, glancing at the others.

My face falls, my heart plummeting. I don’t like the way she just said my name. Like this is completely insane, even for me.

“Hold on, we’re not saying no. Just… This isn’t something you can just decide on a whim. If it’s something you feel strongly about, then we’re not shutting it down. We need to discuss this more and lay out expectations. We’d also need to know the omega’s thoughts on this as well, because itinvolvesher. Just because you feel something doesn’t mean she does, remember?” Sasha says with a raised brow, ever the voice of reason.
