“What’s wrong?” The muscles of my jaw tighten as Zeb’s entire body goes on high alert.

“Someone’s following us.” Zeb drives with focus and intensity. His jaw sets and his hands tighten on the wheel.

I fight rising panic as my heart hammers away inside my chest. That fluttery sensation from two powerful orgasms is replaced by fear punching at my gut.

“Who do you think it is?”

“No idea, but the fucker put on the high beams.” Zeb’s eyes narrow against the blinding glare coming through the rearview mirror. “Let’s see how interested he is in following us.”

I tense as Zeb floors the accelerator. We take off with a roar from the engine, leaving the mystery car in our dust.

Zeb expertly maneuvers around sharp turns while I frantically smash down on a brake pedal that doesn’t exist. My stomach twists with dread as fear crawls into my throat, lodging firmly in place.

The thought of accidentally going over the edge of the road does not sit well with me, especially since there’s nothing but rocks and the deadly surge of the ocean down below.

I twist in the passenger seat to look out the rear window. In what seems like slow motion, the mystery car accelerates, careening toward us on a collision course.

“Zeb!” A scream escapes me an instant before the car slams into us, sending us off the road. Our rear bumper crumples under the force of impact, groaning from strain.

The car swerves wildly, but Zeb regains control moments before we crash into a guardrail. Fortunately, the guardrails keeps us from launching into the air.

Zeb yanks us back onto the road. He increases our speed beyond what’s safe. There’s no escape from whatever lunatic drives the other car.

A quick glance shows the driver busted out one of his headlights, but otherwise, the grill of his vehicle appears undamaged.

My heart aches from the frenetic drumming against my ribcage and the coppery tang of blood fills my mouth from where I bit into my lower lip when we hit the guardrail.

Eyes focused on the road ahead, Zeb navigates the turns with expert precision.

The tires screech against the pavement as we take one turn after another. Panic takes hold of me as the lunatic driver follows closely behind, his remaining headlight blazes through the darkness.

Zeb’s grip on the steering wheel tightens, and he exchanges a glance with me. A silent understanding passes between us.

“Eyes forward,” Zeb calls out. “Brace!”

The car once again slams into us. This time, our rear window shatters from the impact. Sparks fly between the two cars as we drift into a turn on two wheels.

I’m thrown against the door, but Zeb manages to right our vehicle before we launch over the edge and into oblivion.

His impressive reflexes are the only thing keeping us alive. He doesn’t let up on the accelerator, desperately trying to outrun our pursuer.

“Fuck.” Zeb miraculously keeps us on the road. Behind us, sparks fly as the twisted metal of our crumpled bumper grinds against the road surface.

I take another look at our pursuer.

“Zeb…” Terror twists at my stomach.

“I see him.” Terse and brusque, Zeb doesn’t waste words. “Don’t worry.”

Don’t worry? How does he expect me not to worry when we race toward an inevitable crash at alarming speed?

My heart accelerates with each turn of the wheel. My hands tremble as I take in our pursuer. My anger ignites as I look into Scott’s eyes and find murderous rage twisting his face.

“What do we do?” I wipe the sweat from my palms on my jeans in an effort to stop the trembling in my fingers. It does no good. Instead, I hold my breath and prepare for whatever happens next.

The car slams into us again and again. Each time, Zeb struggles to regain control. But then, the worst thing happens. The next time Scott hits us, the mangled mess of our bumper and the grill of Scott’s car become entangled and entrapped.

Our car jumps forward as a scream erupts from my throat.
