Page 110 of Rescuing Kaye

“Hang on!” Zeb battles for control as our car slams against the guardrail. More sparks fly, illuminating the dark sky as our cars grind together. Zeb smashes the brakes, desperate to keep us from breaking through the protective barrier, but Scott guns his engine.

I brace for the worst as our car breaches the safety of the guardrail.

We’re thrown forward suddenly as our vehicle comes to a jarring halt. My body slams against the seatbelt as the nose of the car tips forward.

The only sound is the hiss of steam rising from the engine, punctuated by the occasional groan of metal from the guardrail.

“Kaye, are you okay?” Zeb checks with me, his calming voice pulls me out of my fear-induced stupor.

“Y-yes.” I barely process his question and manage a quick assessment for injuries and find nothing life threatening.

“We’ve got to get out of here.”

The car tilts precariously over the edge of the cliff, threatening to plunge us into oblivion at any moment. I make the mistake of looking down and see nothing but waves crashing against the rocks far below us. It’s a deadly surge we will not survive.

My heart races as the car rocks back. I want to move, but my body refuses to budge.

Zeb reaches for the clasp of my seatbelt, but I shake my head too terrified to speak. “Kaye, we need to move our weight back.” He glances out the shattered back window with a grimace. “We’re running out of time.”

With that, he unlatches my seatbelt as the car tips forward. Gravity takes hold of me and I fall forward, but Zeb sticks out his arm, pushing me back into my seat.

“Pull the lever to push the seat back. I need you to crawl over your seat and out the back window.”

My body’s frozen in place.

With me not responding, Zeb leans over me and pulls on the adjustment for the seat back.

When the back of my seat falls back, Zeb practically lifts me up and out of my seat, moving me back.

“Move!” He barks the command and my body reacts on its own.

Before I know it, I scramble into the back seat and crawl out the back window. The car rocks back. Zeb’s right on my heels, pushing me up and through the rear window.

Adrenaline shoots through my veins imbuing me with superhuman strength. I slide out of the back window, onto the hood of Scott’s vehicle.

Spiderweb cracks in the front windshield radiate outward from where he hit his head. Blood drips down the front of his face. While I stare at him, he opens his eyes and glares at me.

Behind me, Zeb has more difficulty climbing out of the back window. Our car tilts toward the abyss. Without thinking, I spin around and grip the opening of the window, placing all my weight on the back of our window until Zeb works his way free.

Twisted metal groans and shifts. Zeb grabs me by the waist and vaults off our car as it tilts forward and slides a foot over the edge.

Scott’s eyes widen as the guardrail finally gives way. The SUV falls forward, dragging Scott’s vehicle with it. It slips closer and closer to the edge and the deadly drop.

Scott’s face contorts with fear. He moves fast, unbuckling his seatbelt and barely manages to get out of his car before both vehicles tip over the cliff’s edge.

Gravity wins this fight as the three of us look on in horror. Both cars plummet over the side, disappearing into the darkness below. They crash against the rocks, making the ground shake, squeals of twisting metal bring my shoulders to my ears, then there’s a loud splash as they hit the water below and disappear beneath the raging surf.

If we’d been in that car, no one would ever know where to look for us.

I clutch at Zeb’s hand as we turn to face Scott.

“What the hell do you think you were doing?” Zeb rages at Scott. “You could’ve killed her.”

“She doesn’t deserve to live.” Scott stalks toward us, hatred burning in his eyes. “Not after you left me.”

The tension between us is so thick, I can barely breathe and it’s as if time slows down. I cling protectively to Zeb.

“I don’t belong to you. What do you think you’re doing? Just let me go.” I try to reason with Scott, but Zeb pushes me protectively behind him, shielding me with his body.
