“Things are moving a little fast, don’t you think?”

“I’m actually trying not to think. I just want to live in the moment, and let’s be realistic. Once classes start in the fall, I’m going to have very little free time. We went on a hike in the redwoods yesterday. It was amazing.”

“I bet.”

“No, it really was. And Alec knows what he’s doing.”

“He’s a Guardian and former SEAL, knowing his shit is basically in the job description. Just be careful, okay?”

“I will.”

“Promise?”

“I promise.” I keep my voice as cheerful as possible.

“Do you like him? Like—likehim?”

“I don’t know. We really connect. We’re only going camping. I mean, it’s not like we’re getting married or anything.”

“I know, I know.” Kaye shakes her head, laughing softly. “I’m just teasing you. Seriously, I’m happy for you. You deserve to be happy. You deserve to have fun. And if something more comes out of this? Well, you deserve that too.”

“Thanks, and I am happy. I promise I’ll fill you in on all the gory details when I get back.”

“And when is that?”

“Alec, how long are we going to be gone?”

“A couple of days at most. Tell them we should be back early in the week.”

“Kaye, did you hear that?”

“I did. Make sure you take loads of pictures.”

“I will. Talk soon.”

“Bye! Have fun!”

I sink back into my seat and take a deep breath, feeling like I survived some sort of intense interrogation with one of my oldest friends.

A smirk stays on Alec’s face for the next hour as we drive toward Sequoia National Park. We trade the coastline for California’s central agricultural basin, then climb until fields change to rocks and trees take over.

My heart pounds with excitement. I’m excited to be alone with Alec in the woods. Somehow, it’s more dangerous being with him without the safety net of civilization. There’s no one to call if things get weird.

But the thing is, I’m not worried about that.

The beauty of the towering trees inspires awe as we enter the forest. I can’t wait to explore it with Alec.

“This is going to be amazing.” My voice fills with anticipation.

“I really think you’re going to enjoy it.” His smile mirrors mine.

We park the car at a Ranger’s station, but instead of unloading our backpacks, Alec heads inside.

“Come on, love.” He gestures for me to follow him.

“What are we doing?”

“Have to register with the ranger if we’re camping on the trail.”
