Oh God, thank you!

He’s alive!

I’ve been afraid of it all along, but I didn’t realize how terrified I was until now, as the flood of pure relief hits me. For a second, I fight the urge to fly over and fling myself at him, throw my arms around his neck, and press kisses to his face, his lips, his eyes—

Stop!

“Hello, Scarlett.” His voice is low and dangerous. And yet it still has gooseflesh rippling over my skin. Just as it always did.

Fear and uncertainty crash through me, but beneath it all, there’s a flicker of something else – desire.

Fuck, I want him.

Now.

Why, goddammit?

What’s wrong with me?

His dark eyes bore into mine as if he can see straight through to my soul.

“Anton!” I stare at him. “What…? How…?”

God, I’m a fool!

Of course he would be waiting. The man anticipates everything.

“Did you really think I wouldn’t expect you back?” He sets the glass down and rises, and everything within me clenches. The tension between us is palpable, electric. “But you’re resourceful, I must give you that.”

“Maybe I am,” I say, trying to maintain a semblance of bravado despite the countless conflicting emotions rising within me. “Or maybe I just don’t care.”

He chuckles as he reaches me. A strong hand reaches out to cup my face. “Oh, but you should, Scarlett. You should care.”

I swallow hard, my mask of bravado slipping at the sensation of his skin against mine.

“Either way,” Anton’s voice is rough, sending tremors through my body. “You won’t leave here again. Not this time.”

His words hang in the air, heavy with unspoken promises and threats. The diamond may have been my goal, but the stakes change in an instant. The lines between enemy and lover blur as I stand before the man who’s touch I crave so much.

And I’m not sure which one scares me more.

Chapter 7

Anton

I study Scarlett’s expression as she realizes she’s been caught. Panic dances in her deep dark eyes, her breathing becoming erratic.

“Anton!” she gasps, taking a step back. “What…? How…?”

“Did you really think I wouldn’t expect you back?” I feel the weight of the diamond in my hand. “You’re resourceful,Zayka, I must give you that.”

She laughs nervously, running a hand through her rich red hair. “Maybe,” she says with forced bravado. “Or maybe I just don’t care.” As she speaks, I notice her hands shaking and can’t help but chuckle.

Taking a step closer, I reach out to cup her face. “Oh, but you should, Scarlett. You should care.” As I touch her skin, her breath hitches, and her eyes flicker with something more than fear – desire. “Either way,” my voice is rough with need, “you won’t leave here again. Not this time.”

“Please, Anton.” She tries to pull away. “I only came back for my things. It’s not safe for me here.”

“Safe?” With a laugh, I tighten my grip on her chin. “You should have thought about that before bringing danger to my doorstep. Thanks to your stupidity, Nikolai has been taken by my enemy.”
