I smile at my phone and slip it in my back pocket.

“Mmm. Mmm. Mmm. Mmm. Mmm.” Eve plops a giant glob of cream cheese onto her bagel and sings under her breath. “You got it, you got it bad.”

I throw up a hand. “Calm down, Usher. It’s not that serious.”

“Why are you trying to deny your feelings for that man?” She points the butter knife at me and slams her free hand against her hip. “It isn’t a crime to have a crush on your boyfriend.”

“Fakeboyfriend.” I grab half the bagel off her plate and take a bite.

“What?” Her eyes narrow and she squeaks, “What did you just do? Did you just take a bite of my bagel, Kit Kat? It is too early, Lord! Too early in the morning for this type of foolishness.”

I sit on the only barstool we own and rest my elbows on the laminate counter. “But I’m hungry.” I bat my eyes at her, and she plucks my forehead.

“If I didn’t love you, Kit Kat…”

“Love you too, Ma.”

“Don’t think I’ve forgotten about what we were talking about.” She eyes me as she starts spreading cream cheese on a second bagel.

I sigh. She is not going to let this go. “Look, is Theo attractive? Yes.”

“Hell yes!”

“Ok. Hell yes.” I roll my eyes as she shimmies. “But that’s it.”

“If he asked you to actually date him, would you?” Eve leans on the countertop and takes a bite of her bagel.

“I don’t know. Maybe.”

“You lie.”

“No, I don’t.”

“Then why are you sweating?” She points to my forehead.

“I just got back from the gym. You know that.”

“Sweating like a sinner in church.” She tsks.

I roll my eyes and burst out in laughter. “You are so crazy.”

“Now you’re sounding like that little Filipino.”

“It’s a shame he’s going to be getting married. All these years I thought maybe you two would -”

“Don’t you dare finish that sentence. Don’t you dare utter that thought.”

“But Ma -”

“Zip it, Kit Kat.” Eve zips her fingers across her lips. “If you mention him too many times in a row, he magically appears.”

“Oh, are we having bagels this morning?” Tommy’s door swings open and he glides over to the kitchen.

“See! What did I tell you?” Eve narrows her eyes at me. “You conjured him, you witch.”

“No bagel for me?” He looks at the counter, disappointed.

“Aren’t you supposed to be on that diet?” I remind him.
