She kisses both of my cheeks.

“I thought I forgot something in our room,” I lie, and it tastes bitter on my tongue. “I’m alright,” I rub her arm when she narrows her eyes at me. “Now that the sun is gone, the likelihood that I faint has diminished significantly.”

Theo laughs and Athena’s frown turns into a warm and loving smile.

“What a wonderful sense of humor you have, Cate, darling.” She claps her hands in glee. “Finally, another funny woman in the family!”

“And by another funny woman,” Steven wraps his arm over his wife’s shoulders. “I assume you mean in addition to yourself?”

Athena furrows her brow. “But of course,” she clicks her tongue. “You don’t really think I was referring to Contessa.”

“You’re right,” Theo raises his voice for Tess to overhear from the drinks table. “Tess isn’t funny at all.”

Tess whips around, eyes squinted, Mai Tai in hand. “I’ll have you all know,” she points with the tiny pink umbrella from her drink, “I am by far the funniest person here.”

“Maybe the funniest looking,” Theo winks at me and I swear I can hear Tess’s nostrils flare.

“God doesn’t like ugly, Theo.” Tess sips her drink then sticks her tongue out at him.

“But I guess Liam does,” Theo pokes his elbow into his sister’s ribs, and she snorts out a laugh.

“I hate you.”

Liam comes up behind Tess and wraps his arms around her waist, planting a kiss on her cheek. “Well, I for one think you’re going to look so cute in that hula outfit.”

Tess crinkles her nose at him. “You mean YOU are going to look so cute in that hula outfit. Which reminds me, we still have a tie breaker in the Wedding Games.”

Hellfire. The tie breaker.

Tess motions everyone to gather around the table and take their designated seats for the final event in the Wedding Games. Once we are all in position, Tess explains the game.

“We will need two individuals to volunteer. One from Team Groom and one from Team Bride. These individuals will be asked a series of questions to see who knows the bride and groom best. Whoever matches the most answers with the bride and groom’s answers will be declared the winner.”

Tess glances around the table at both the bride and groom’s families to see if they have any questions. When no one speaks up, she moves on.

“Right. Simple enough. Now, I will not be able to volunteer because I’m the one who wrote the questions; therefore, I know all the answers. So. Team Groom, who is your representative?”

She eyes Theo, Isaac, Liam, and Drew. No one is raising their hands. She rolls her eyes.

“Someone volunteer or I’ll be forced to pick.”

I nudge Theo in the ribs. He dares a glance at me.

“You should do it,” I whisper.

Theo squints his eyes at me. “Why?”

“Who knows them better than you?” I shrug. “And if by chance you lose to Team Bride, I’ll be able to rub your face in it.”

“Oh, is that so?” He drapes his arm behind my chair, his fingers brushing my shoulder. “You realize if I win, you’re dancing the hula in nothing but a coconut bra and grass skirt, right?”

“Maybe I’m willing to take my chances.” I wiggle my eyebrows, enticing him to take the bait.

That wicked smile of his. It melts me every time.

“You want to make a wager on it?” His eyes dance with mischief.

“Isn’t there already a bet on the table?”
