Giving her what she needs, I hold her until we both fall asleep.

I’m jolted from a sound sleep to my phone ringing. Groggily, I shift from beneath Sukie, snatch up my phone, and answer. “Yeah,” I grumble into the phone, my voice thick from sleep.

“Get your ass over to the club,” Salem commands, his voice holding a sense of urgency that immediately snaps me awake.

I toss the covers to the side and rise out of bed, hearing Sukie moan in protest behind me.

“What’s wrong?”

I shove my legs into jeans and my feet into boots.

“The security alarm went off at the club. I tried callin’ Laredo but can’t get him to answer his phone,” Salem explains.

Since my father’s appearance, Laredo has been watching the place after closing, sleeping on the couch in the upstairs loft. The club is an easy target and more vulnerable, isolated on the edge of town, an ideal location for my father to fuck with. Adrenaline surges through my veins. Not to mention, the strip club is one of our primary sources of income.

“The others are on the way.”

Without wasting another second, I finish throwing on some clothes.

“Luca?” Sukie sits up in bed. “What’s wrong?” Her voice is heavy with worry.

I shrug my cut over my shoulder, secure my weapon at my side, then walk over to her side of the bed. I bend down.

“Club shit, babe. Go back to sleep.” I kiss her. “Don’t leave the house.”

“Luca, I have an uneasy feeling.” She touches my cheek, looking me in the eyes. “Please be careful.”

I kiss her again.I fucking love you.I stop myself from saying the words out loud.

I leave Sukie’s side and exit the bedroom, rushing out the front door and locking it before getting on my bike and driving into the darkness.

As I ride toward the strip club, an ominous feeling hangs in the air, the sounds of my bike’s engine and the humming of the wheel turning against the blacktop encapsulating me.

Suddenly, headlights appear behind me, the bright light reflecting off the side mirror. It fucks with my vision briefly before I’m able to make out a black car tailing me. I twist the throttle, accelerating. They increase their speed, closing in on me again.

The vehicle swerves into the other lane, getting dangerously close to my bike. They back off, only to repeat the dangerous maneuver. These motherfuckers are toying with me. I take out my gun and fire two shots at the car. It swerves off the road, slows, but quickly regains control. Then it’s closing the gap between us again.

Shit.

My heart pounds like a war drum, urging me to push the bike harder and faster. My father is behind this. If he wanted me dead, I would be already. He’s playing mind games with me, fucking with my head. My father is trying to prove something. My fingers tighten around the grip of my gun.

As we continued to race down an empty stretch of road lined with towering trees on either side, I steady myself and aim carefully at the car’s front tire while maintaining control of my bike. I pull the trigger multiple times. Gunfire erupts as my bullets pierce through metal and rubber. The car veers wildly from side to side as the driver loses control, careening off the road and crashing into a tree.

I keep driving, leaving the scene in my rearview mirror, knowing more enemies could be waiting to take their place.

I finally reach the club, my tires slinging loose gravel as I race into the empty parking lot.Why the fuck isn’t anyone here yet?Just as I finish the thought, the silence is shattered by the rumbling sound of approaching motorcycles. Salem and Juneau fly into the parking lot and quickly park their bikes. Salem’s eyes drop to the gun in my hand.

“Trouble?” he asks as the three of us rush toward the club’s entrance.

“Yeah,”

“Us too.” Salem draws his weapon, as does Juneau, when we notice the door is slightly ajar.

I cautiously walk inside first. The lights are dim, but there are no signs of anything being out of place until we step farther into the room.

“Shit!”

Laredo is lying face down on top of the bar. We rush to his side, immediately noticing blood on the bar top beneath his body. I carefully roll him over, not knowing what we will find, and he groans.
