Preston’s grin took over his entire face. “Well, well, well…good for you.”

I dropped my agenda folder on the conference room table. “I gotta tell you, it took everything in me not to ask her to marry me by the time that I left her place Sunday night.”

My brother’s head reared back, getting serious. “Are you for real?”

I nodded. “I’m telling you, there’s just something about her.”

“While I understand getting struck by lightning, you hardly know her, Rush,” he pointed out. “You might want to give it some time, don’t you think?”

“Because you did?” I deadpanned.

“I’m notyou,”he stated evenly. “You don’t…you don’t catch feelings.”

“Which is all the more reason to trust what it is that I feel for Landry,” I told him. “I’m thirty-eight, Preston. I’m not some young kid that hasn’t experienced the world yet. I’m as grown as you get, and I’ve never felt this way over a woman before.” I shook my head solemnly. “While I realize that I sound like the biggest pussy in the world, this shit with Landry is real. In fact, I’m so fucking addicted to her, that I’m taking a long lunch just to see her today.”

“Heavenly Father, Jesus Christ,” Preston swore. “You’re fucking serious.”

“As a heart attack.”

“Wow.”

“Yep. Wow.”

We stared at each other for a few seconds before Preston finally asked, “Does she feel the same way?” This time, my brother looked genuinely concerned for me. “I mean, are you sure she’s interested in something long term?”

I chuckled softly at that. “Doesn’t matter,” I answered honestly. She’s the one, and I’m not letting her go, no matter how much she doesn’t like CEOs with brown hair and green eyes.”

Preston’s lips quirked. “Well, I wish you luck,” he said. “If that audit is any indication, she works a lot of hours, too. You guys are hardly going to see each other.”

I eyed my brother. “It’s a good thing that I’m the boss, then.”

“I guess it is,” he replied, that grin back on his face.

Three hours later, I was fighting to get out of the office. Luckily, we’d had no fires to put out this morning, but Mondays were always a hectic thing. While I only expected my upper management team to work weekends if needed, the rest of my empire had their weekends off. Nevertheless, they all knew what was expected of them come Monday, so the phones never stopped ringing, the elevators never stopped moving, and the clock never stopped ticking.

However, because God was very aware that I was in love for the very first time in my life, He’d made it so that Eric Dishman needed to cancel our one o’clock meeting today, so that gave me plenty of time to take Landry to lunch and not have to rush back on my end.

So, walking into the Jacobi Auditing building, I fired off a text to the woman in question.

Me:I’m here 2 take u 2 lunch.

Blondie:U r?

Me:I am. I’m waiting in the lobby

Blondie:What about the snazzy peanut butter sandwich I brought with me 2day?

I chuckled as my fingers flew across the screen.

Me:U can bring it with u. We’ll have a picnic

“Mr. Crawford?”

Looking up, I saw Bryant Stanton making his way to stand in front of me. Though I didn’t like the man, he was Landry’s boss, and I wasn’t here to make her life more difficult. So, instead of telling him what I thought of him, I reached my arm out to shake his hand.

You know, like a professional.

“Bryant,” I said as he took my hand. “It’s good to see you again.”
