Once we got inside, I shut the door, then offered her a drink. “I don’t have anything to make margaritas, but I do have some whiskey, bourbon, and cognac.”

Landry shook her head. “I’m going over to Rowena’s after this,” she informed me. “I’ll get drunk there.”

Turning her around in my arms, I pulled her close. “What can I do, baby?” The obvious thing would be to offer her a job, but I knew Landry well enough to know that she’d never accept. Landry Novak was a fighter, and she wasn’t one to take handouts, no matter how practical.

“Nothing,” she mumbled as she wrapped her arms around my waist.

“I’ll do anything,” I said, meaning every word. “Whatever I need to make you feel better.”

Landry dropped her arms before stepping back a bit. When she looked up at me, she said, “Can you buy Jacobi Auditing and fire Bryant and Ward Kelly?”

“I’m sorry?”

Her entire frame deflated as she ran her hands through her blonde hair, messing up her ponytail something awful, though I’d never be stupid enough to comment on her appearance. She might go off and do something stupid like making sure that she was always put together. I liked Landry best when she was comfortable in her own skin.

“I might have thrown your weight around,” she muttered.

“Thrown my weight around?”

She looked at me sheepishly. “I might have implied that, as my boyfriend, you were going to buy Jacobi Auditing, then fire my enemies as a way to avenge me.”

“I see,” I murmured, doing my best not to laugh. She was already feeling horrible, so I didn’t want to add to it by having her think that I was laughingather.

“I was just so mad,” she said, explaining herself. “He was so damn smug, and…and…I’m still so mad. He’s lucky that I didn’t pop him one in the face.” She shook her head tiredly. “He’s lucky I didn’t want to spend the night in jail.”

“Baby, I’d never let you spend a night in jail,” I assured her. “I’d be right there to bail you out.”

“That’s nice,” she sighed absently, not really hearing me.

I placed my hands on her shoulders. “How about you go see Rowena, get drunk, then I’ll pick you up when I’m done for the day?” I suggested.

“It’s not like I have anything better to do,” she grumbled, and I supposed that she didn’t.

Chapter 17

Landry~

“Is that the Devil?”

“Shh, no,” Rowena muttered. “It’s the World Meaning card, and it’s upright.”

“Upright to your side, but reversed on mine,” I scoffed. “I also know what that means.”

“It’s upright, you drunk girl,” she argued. “So, it signifies harmony, fulfillment, and completion.”

“No,” I argued back. “It’s representing incompletion and lack of closure.”

“You’re killing me, you ding dong,” she sighed before taking another drink of her margarita. Usually, we opted for blended margaritas because they were more fun, but not this time. This time, we were downing margaritas on the rocks, and my only hope was that I didn’t throw up in Rush’s nice car when he came to pick me up.

“Really, Row? The Chariot now?” I grumbled.

Her hazel eyes speared me with a look. “It signifies aggression, lack of control and direction-”

“Of course, I have no direction,” I whined like a brat. “I no longer have a job.”

“Upright, it represents control, willpower, and-”

“Can we get to the part where you tell me what my new job is?”
