I summarized my two findings.

“Anything else?”

“As I was leaving, Uri’s mother yelled what I think was a warning.”

Monck waited.

“Something about a fiery cataclysm.”

“The Old Testament is chockful of that end-of-times crap.”

“You think Adeera was quoting the Bible?”

“Probably.”

“Benjamin said the Stribbes belong to a faction that’s holier than thou.”

“His exact words.”

A series of beeps indicated an incoming call. FaceTime.

“Keep me updated,” I said, finger combing my wet hair back behind my ears.

“Right.”

Clicking over to Ryan, I wondered if Monck would bother.

“Bonsoir, me chère.”

“Bonsoir,” I replied, feeling better just seeing his face. His beyond blue eyes. “What’s up, ace?”

“The mercury. Nothing else. Except I ran into your boss in the lobby yesterday.”

“Dr. LaManche.”

“No, King Charles.”

“Funny. What did he want?”

“He has a set of remains with your name on them. That didn’t come out right.”

“No. It didn’t.”

“He asked when you’d be back.”

As if I wasn’t feeling pressured enough.

“Any progress on Deniz Been?” I asked.

“The more I talk to the girlfriend, the shadier she looks.”

“Émilie Gaudreau?”

“Yes.” Ryan must have noticed the pillows I’d stacked behind me. “Are you in bed?”

“I am.”

“What are you wearing?”
