“You guys are impossible.”

Jemi put on the radio and turned it up.

Aaron looked out the window and stared at the trees in the distance. But he couldn’t deny that Sol was completely right. This was personal now. He’d crossed a line with Sydney and there was no going back. Peter was also right. All he could think about was Sydney’s death. It made the drive unbearable. When they finally arrived at Biotech. Aaron had his door open before the car stopped. He rushed to the building, and the others were left to catch up.

“Do we know what we’re doing?” Sol asked as he jogged behind.

“Follow my lead,” Aaron said with his gaze fixed on the door.

After entering the building, he held up his badge as he advanced on the reception desk.

The receptionist stood and took a step back. “Can I help you?”

“I hope so,” Aaron said. “I’m Special Agent Aaron Pritchard, FBI. Has a Professor Sydney Davis come through here?”

“She has. Why? Is something wrong? She’s gone up to Mr. Cameron’s office.”

“We have reason to believe that she intends to harm someone here.”

“Mr. Cameron?”

“Yes.”

She grabbed the phone, but Aaron reached across the counter to stop her. “Don’t alert anyone. We don’t want her to know we’re here.”

“But — ”

“Please. She is very dangerous and more people could get hurt if she’s alerted to our presence. We need to retain the element of surprise. Can you tell me how many people are on that floor?”

The receptionist’s eyes flitted across their stern faces.

Jemi moved into action. “Please,” she said. “I’m Sydney’s psychologist. She is in a very fragile state right now. She is capable of anything, and we need your help in order to end this peacefully.”

The receptionist nodded. “She’s on the fifth floor. Uh, Mr. Cameron is up there with three associates and his personal assistant.”

“Thank you.”

They hurried to the elevators. “Psychologist?” Peter said.

“Nice one,” Bec said. “I wish I had thought of it.”

Chapter22

Sydney walked slowlyacross the floor and sat at the table.

She looked at Pallon. “I want you to know that I don’t blame you, Chris. You had to protect your family. I forgive you.”

He tried to speak, but his words came out a jumbled apology that turned into a mumble at the end.

She looked at Leo, then at Myles. Before she spoke, she prayed.

If it’s possible, can you destroy this weapon and all of my work? Don’t let these men use it. I’m prepared to see you today. To be in paradise with you right now. I won’t let them have control of my fear, and your perfect love casts the fear away. All I ask is that you don’t let them hurt anyone else.

She could do nothing but trust God now and she still felt certain that she was exactly where she was meant to be. It didn’t turn out how she expected, but she knew this was right. Whatever God did, he had this.

“I’m sorry, Myles, but I won’t work for you. You’ll have to kill me.”

Leo smirked. “You always were a stubborn — ”
