The gagging ache that tightened her throat suddenly released, and peace took its place. It was so startling of a change that she chuckled.

“That’s a surprising response,” Myles said. “Gentleman, I think we may have broken her.”

She looked at each man, seeing them for what they were. In her last moments, God had been kind enough to open her eyes. She could see the truth. These men full of pride and contempt had no control. God was in control and no matter what happened, the outcome, even if it was death, was up to him.

“Myles, you asked me if I would work for you? I have my answer.”

“This is cozy,” Aaron said from the back seat.

“At least you’re not in the middle,” Sol said, pressing his hands into his knees. Bec shouldered him so he bumped against Aaron.

“Don’t like being so close to your fiancée?” she said, teasing.

“Sit back and relax, boys. This is going to take a while,” Jemi said from the front.

“I better call Knightly and get him to send some backup.”

“You think you’ll need it?” Bec said.

“I don’t know what to expect. These guys are dangerous. As far as I know, they may have their hands on a weapon that could kill a lot of people. I don’t know what Sydney will find at Biotech, but we have to prepare for the worst.”

Peter turned in his seat to face Aaron. “Can I ask what exactly the worst-case scenario is here? That they kill her?”

“No. I’m worried they might kill us all.”

Peter looked at each person in the car. “They’ll have to work hard to make that happen.”

“But I need every one of you to know what is possible.”

“If I always made decisions based on the worst-case scenario,” Sol said, “I’d never leave the house.”

“I just want you to know what you might face.”

“Noted,” Peter said. “Now, can I give you some advice?”

“Sure.”

“You will be tempted to picture Sydney’s death over and over again during the agonizing minutes of this drive. Have a little self-control and spend your time thinking of anything else.”

“I’ve dealt with these situations before. It’s not the first time my target has been in danger.”

Sol shared a look with Peter, then glanced at Bec. “Yeah. She was my mark.”

“Sydney and I aren’t in a relationship.”

“Uh,” Bec said, then slammed her lips together.

“What? Did she say something?” Aaron said.

“No, I don’t know anything.”

“Okay,” Sol put up his hands. “Can we put on some music?”

“Thank you,” Aaron said.

“No problem. You are obviously uncomfortable talking about the woman you’re in love with.”
