Everyone moved aside as Sydney knelt beside Bec. She looked at Sol. “I’ve calculated the dosage, but since this is untested, I don’t know what’s going to happen next.”

Jemi reached a heavy hand across Bec and laid it on Sydney’s knee. “No matter what, everyone in this room will be okay in this lifetime or the next.”

Sydney nodded, then injected the drug. She only paused a moment before getting needles for everyone else. She went for Jemi next, but Jemi put a hand up to stop her. “Shouldn’t you do it next?”

“Not until I’ve got everyone else. I don’t know what will happen and if it causes me to pass out or something, I want to make sure no one else is missed.”

Jemi nodded.

“Has she still got a pulse?” Sydney asked after she’d gotten everyone but herself.

“Still there. Still weak,” Sol said.

“I need to get the rest of the needles prepared for the others. Aaron, call Lewis and tell him to be ready.”

“Why is Bec so bad, but the rest of us aren’t?” Sol asked. He was rubbing her hair between his fingers and staring down at her face.

“I don’t know. Without further testing, I can’t tell you that. My best guess is that because she’s the smallest, it’s progressed faster for her. I’m so sorry.”

He looked up at Sydney and shook his head. “If she doesn’t make it, none of us will.”

Sydney wasn’t sure that was true but couldn’t bring herself to say it.

After she left the needles outside the door for Lewis to pick up, she gave herself the injection and sat back against the wall in the small room with everyone else. Her vision began to blur and she leaned her head on the wall, listing sideways before everything went black.

Chapter24

Sydney blinkedher eyes open but squinted at the light.

“Welcome back,” a familiar voice said. She felt a hand press into her shoulder and she reached up to lay her own hand over his. “Aaron. You’re alive.”

“So are you.”

“What about everyone else? Bec?” She struggled to sit up and Aaron helped to lift her. She squeezed her eyes shut against the spinning room and almost blacked out again.

“Bec has improved, but she’s still resting. Everyone else is feeling much better. Better than ever, actually.

“Good.” She squinted at Aaron. “How long was I out?”

“Only a couple of hours. Lewis gave me an update, said it looks like the others will be okay as well. They’ll be fit to face court for their crimes.”

“Maybe I should be disappointed they lived, but I’m actually glad to hear that.”

“It’s okay to be glad. You never wanted to hurt anyone, even the bad guys.”

“So what now?”

“Now the CDC will need to do some testing and clear us, and then we can all try to get back to normal.”

Sydney looked across the room at Sol, who was holding Bec’s hand. “I’m sorry I ruined your wedding.”

Sol looked up. She expected him to look drawn and weary, but his face was bright. “Not ruined, just postponed.”

“I don’t know how you do that.”

“Do what?”

“Handle everything so well.”
