“I’m used to the unexpected.” He looked back at Bec and it was clear how much he loved her.

Sydney’s eyes flicked to Aaron and then away. He said he cared about her, but that was when they were facing death. His feelings might not change, but she couldn’t rely on them. She couldn’t let herself look forward to anything with him outside of this room.

She pushed aside her misgivings and looked around the room now that her head had cleared.

Peter and Jemi were leaning against each other on the other side of the room with their eyes closed. “Are they all right?” she asked Aaron.

“Sleeping. I asked Lewis to bring us some cots, but he hasn’t made it back yet.”

“Does that mean we’ll be stuck here all night?”

“The CDC won’t take any chances. It could be longer if they have reason to believe that it might spread. But the fact you have a cure should help.”

“It’s not a cure so much as it helps the body accept the changes that have been made.”

“I feel like there’s a lesson in there somewhere.”

“It was your own revelation that led to finding the answer, so I guess it could work reciprocally.”

Aaron reached out and put a hand on her arm, running it down to her hand, where he laced his fingers in hers.

“Maybe this isn’t the right time, but I was thinking.”

“About?”

“Mostly you. When you passed out, we didn’t know what to expect. All I know is that I’ve wasted enough time and I don’t want to waste any — What’s wrong?”

“Nothing. Why?”

“You were frowning. I thought I’d said something.”

“No. Was I frowning?”

“You were.”

“Oh. I guess I was wondering if you still felt the same as before. You do.”

“You thought that would change? Or were you hoping that would change?”

“No. Don’t change. I mean, I guess I was insecure. Maybe that’s a side effect of a near-death experience.”

“We can call it that if that makes you more comfortable.”

She looked at his sly grin and bumped his shoulder. “You’re not allowed to tease me. I almost died.”

“I’m glad you didn’t.”

“Me too. So what exactly does this look like when we get out of here?”

“I’m going to take Peter’s advice and have a break. What about you?”

“When I get out of here, I’m going to be famous. Now that I’ve perfected the drug, it will help a lot of people.”

“Yeah. I guess you’ll be too busy with speaking engagements to make time for a guy like me.”

“Possibly. But I guess that’s up to you.”

“Is it?”
