“Not everyone can handle dating a celebrity.”

“That’s true,” he said. “You’d probably become very high maintenance.”

“Probably.”

“But you know, I’ve been trained to handle highly stressful situations.”

“Have you? Where’d you learn that?”

“It’s this job I have.”

“You any good at it?”

He laughed. “Not everyone thinks so.”

“What? Who thinks you aren’t any good? Tell me who it is and I’ll beat them up for you.”

“It’s this stuck-up professor named Syd Davis.”

“Sounds horrible.”

“Maybe. Or it could be that she’s about to make a huge discovery in science, so she’s got a lot on her mind.”

Sydney sighed and reached up a hand to his face. “I’m so glad it was you who came to protect me.”

“Me too.”

“And you do lookreallygood in a suit, but do you still have any of those ratty T-shirts?”

“I have one or two. Not the same ones, but still ratty. They’re good to work out in.”

“Your dad would be so proud.” She flinched when she realized what she said. Aaron’s head dropped. “Sorry, I didn’t mean — ”

“No, it’s okay.”

“Have you spoken to him recently?”

“No.”

“Do you think it’s time?”

“I already know what he’ll say.”

“I know his disapproval has been hard for you, but you can stand before him and be proud of your accomplishments. I really think you should see him.”

Aaron picked at his thumbnail. “Would you come with me?”

“You want me to be there?”

“Yeah.”

“Are you sure?”

“You know my past, and maybe that would help, but I feel like your presence would soften the blow.”

“If you want me to be there, yeah. I will. Absolutely.”

“Thanks.”
