“You’ve done well.” Dean looked at Sydney. “She’s a good choice.”

“Thanks, Dad,” he mumbled. “But you’re getting a little ahead of us. This is new.”

“It is?” Sylvia said. “Well, you two look very comfortable together. You make a lovely couple.”

Aaron looked at Sydney and smiled at the flush on her face. “We’ll go before things get out of hand.”

“Will you come visit again?” Sylvia asked.

“Yeah. Of course we will, Mom.”

He kissed her cheek before heading for the door.

“Thank you for coming,” Sylvia said, waving as they walked to the car. “Both of you.”

“So,” Sydney said once they had pulled away, “that went well.”

“It did.”

“How do you feel?”

“Relieved. I know I didn’t need my dad’s approval to be whole, but it was a real gift to hear him say all those things. Embarrassing, but good. I had no idea.”

“Then it was a good thing we came.”

“A very good thing. Thank you.”

Epilogue

“Sydney!”

Sydney jumped up from her desk. “Aaron.” She pressed a hand to her chest. “You scared me. What is going on?”

“I’ve cleared your schedule for the weekend.”

“Why? How?”

“The perks of having friends in high places.”

“I knew it was a mistake to work for the government. It’s been a blissful couple of months, but the dream is over.”

“It’s not like you to be melodramatic. Especially when they’ve given you everything you asked for. Now turn off your computer and let’s go.”

“Where are we going?”

“It’s a surprise.”

“I don’t like surprises.”

“Sure you do. Let’s go.”

She looked at her computer and cringed. The idea of a break sounded great, but she’d just begun a new line of research. “Can you give me a few more hours?”

“No. We’re going to be late as it is. Let’s go.”

“Late for what?”
