He smiled and left the room. She couldn’t do anything but follow. She stopped at the door and looked back into the room.

It was in the same government building but a different wing from the one she was in before.

She had thought that one was state of the art, but this one was something she’d only dreamed of. At first she hadn’t wanted to take the job with the government, but they’d given her the freedom, and the paycheck, to do what she wanted, how she wanted. They weren’t looking for exclusivity with her research. They just wanted to be kept informed and have access.

She smiled, then hurried after Aaron, who had already turned the corner. She stopped and crossed her arms. The last couple of months with him had been unexpected. She hadn’t trusted herself with a man, but Aaron had changed all that for her. She was a better person with him and felt more like herself when he was around. She didn’t know such a thing was possible.

He poked his head back around the corner. “Aren’t you coming?”

“Am I? I don’t know. You dashed off.” She smiled slyly and he pursed his lips, then held out his arm.

“This way, please.”

She took her time joining him but slipped her arm through his and smiled. “Are we stopping at my place so I can get changed?”

“Don’t need to.”

“Are you sure?”

“Yes.”

Once they were on the highway, she figured it out. “We’re going to Peter and Jemi’s?”

“We are.”

“Why?”

“Can’t we just go for a visit?”

“Is that what we’re doing?”

“Patience.”

“Didn’t think so.”

The thought of seeing Peter and Jemi again cheered her, so she decided it was worth letting Aaron enjoy his secrets. She’d find out soon enough.

As they wound their way down the long drive, cars appeared parked on the side.

“What’s going on?”

“You’ll see.”

In the growing darkness, the glow from the barn could be seen before they reached the house, and Sydney watched in delight as the barn appeared, lit by thousands of tiny lights.

“That’s beautiful. What’s happening? It looks like a wedding.”

“It is.”

“Who’s? Don’t say ours.”

Aaron laughed. “Would that be so bad?” Aaron hadn’t proposed, but they’d talked about a future together. Her reaction was more reflex than truth.

“How do you even know I want to marry you?”
