“Yes, and I’m kind of busy right now. Why don’t you have a read through the file and then you can ask me any questions you have after.”

“You weren’t busy when you asked to have a coffee with me.”

Her face reddened with a tinge of purple rage. He probably shouldn’t have said that.

“Well, I’m busy now. If you’ll excuse me.”

She put her hand on the door and waited for Aaron to move out of the way so she could close it.

Aaron was impressed with her restraint in closing the door softly. He blew out a slow breath.

“Hey, Lewis.” Aaron turned. Lewis was looking into a microscope. “What are you doing?”

Lewis snapped up straight. “Just looking. Would you like those pertinent facts now?”

“You didn’t see fit to tell me Syd Davis was a woman?”

“I tried, but you didn’t want to know.”

“Right. That is technically true.”

“Sorry, sir.”

“It’s fine. I probably deserve it. Why don’t you fill me in now?” He walked to the windows to check how secure they were.

Lewis cleared his throat. “Well, the professor is working on a drug for cancer patients that will control their immunity during treatment. She’s trying to minimize the side effects of chemotherapy.”

“Any idea why that would put her in danger from others?”

“Because of the side effects of the drug. A newspaper article on Davis’s work included sensitive information that should not have been made public.”

Aaron ran his hand around the window and noted it couldn’t be opened. He rapped a knuckle on it and was pleased to find it wasn’t flimsy. Could even be triple glazed. Might not stop much, but if a threat turned up, it could give them a few extra seconds. Although he still wasn’t convinced of a threat.

“What information?” he asked, turning to Lewis.

Lewis pulled a sheet of paper out of the file and handed it to him.

Aaron read the heading. “The Gazette, huh?” He took his time reading through it, but when he reached the end, he shoved the paper back at Lewis. “This is the actual article?”

“Yes, sir.”

He leaned against a nearby table and crossed his arms. “I should have looked at the file back at the office. I never would have agreed to take this assignment. But I guess Knightly was disciplining me. He’s sure done a good job of it.”

“This assignment was disciplinary?”

“It — sort of.”

“Does that mean that I — ”

“No, not you. Knightly put you with me because I’m a top agent and he wanted you to learn from one of the best.” He gave an ironic snort. “Not that I’m at my best right now.”

“But you don’t think there is a valid threat?”

“What I think is that you got roped into a useless job on your first time out. Maybe it’s for the best, but honestly, the punishment does not fit the crime. I can’t even believe Knightly agreed to this.”

“Sir?”

“Can you stop calling me sir? Just call me Pritchard if you have to be formal.”
