“Okay. But — ”

“Youdoknow the Bourne movies are fictional, right?”

“Yes. But I don’t think — ”

“So a local newspaper publishes a story saying there is a drug that will create a superhuman and the FBI is called in to protect this fantasy?” Aaron squeezed the back of his neck before marching for Syd’s closed door. “I’m going to get to the bottom of this.”

His intention was to throw the door open and get an explanation, but it was locked. His anger diminished only slightly as he knocked and waited for her to open it.

“Yes?” she asked.

He was no longer in the mood for mending fences.

Chapter6

Sydney tipped her head sideways. She had hoped Aaron would leave her to her work. She was determined not to let his attitude affect hers, but when she saw his face in the small window on the door, she tensed, ready for a fight. “Can I help you?” she said when she opened the door.

“You afraid someone is going to break in?” He pointed at the door handle. “Don’t trust us to do our job?”

It wasn’t that long ago that he had been laughing, amused by the misunderstanding. But the lightness he had before was completely gone.

Her steely tone matched his. “If you mean, do I think you’re taking this job seriously? Then no, I don’t trust you’re doing your job to the best of your abilities. And your presence isn’t going to stop me from maintaining the same security measures I had before you turned up.”

“Security measures? Do you know how long it would take me to get through this door if I really wanted to?”

“What difference does it make? According to you, I don’t need any protection.”

“I’m sorry. I take that back. Had I known you created a drug that gives people superpowers, I never would have said such a ridiculous thing. Your life is definitely in danger. By the way, if you need volunteers to test your product, I’d be happy to take part. I’ve always wanted to fly.”

If she could have ground her teeth harder, she would have. “You’re not taking this seriously.”

“Can you blame me?”

She looked over Aaron’s shoulder at Lewis, who turned toward the window when she caught his eye.

“The drug that I’m working on doesn’t make people superhuman.”

“That’s not what the newspaper article said.”

Sydney squeezed her forehead. “That article wasn’t accurate. But it had enough truth in it that my supervisor was concerned. That was why he called you guys.”

“Can you explain to me which parts of the article were accurate? What is it we are dealing with here?”

“There are unwanted side effects.”

“Where does the superhuman part come in?”

“What I’m attempting to do is find a way to increase immunity while minimizing the issues that arise when immunity is abnormally high.”

“So the only thing this drug does is increase immunity.”

“More or less.”

“But your drug increases it too much?”

“Basically.”

“Your responses are concerningly nebulous. I didn’t even know it was possible to have too much immunity.”
