“I’m dying to find out.”

“You stomped back over, grabbed the screwdriver, and got the screws loose.”

“You were very scheming for a nine-year-old.”

“I guess I just know how to motivate you to get the job done.” She gave him a sly smile. “So if you can’t find a way to keep me safe, I’ll just have to do it myself.”

“Oh, okay, that’s how we’re going to play this?”

“If you need help with your motivation.”

He shook his head with a smile. “I don’t. I’m going to make a few phone calls and we are going to see about getting you set up in a more secure workplace. It should be straightforward.”

“Thank you.”

He shrugged. “I guess I’ve learned a thing or two since that bike incident. Now, if you go get dressed. I’ll make my phone calls and we’ll see what we can do.”

“There’s just one thing.”

“Of course there is.”

“I need to be able to keep my work to myself. With this new security you're going to organize, I still want to be the only one with access to the research. I can’t risk anyone else having access.”

“Still don’t trust anyone.”

“It isn’t just that. I also want to keep everyone else safe. If Dr. Pallon had access, he could be in as much danger as I am. This way you only have one scientist to look after.”

“Okay, I’ll make sure we have that in place.”

“Great.”

Chapter10

“The Russian is awake,”Aaron said to Sydney as they drove.

“What?”

“After we sort you out this morning, I’m going to go speak to him.”

“Sort me out,” she mumbled. “You think he’ll tell you anything?”

“Don’t know. But he’s the best lead we have right now.” Aaron’s phone buzzed and he checked the message. “Excellent. I just got word that we’ve got a space at a highly secure government facility ready to receive you. It’s not far from here.”

“How’d you make that happen so fast?”

“Turns out the wheels were already in motion. After last night’s events, Dr. Pallon called whoever it is he knows and they were arranging it.”

“Why didn’t you tell me?”

“That text was the confirmation. I didn’t know before that.”

“But you knew Chris was looking into it. You should have told me.”

“We had already agreed you’d move, I didn’t think it mattered that much. They’ve already sent over a few guys to pack up your office and Dr. Pallon is already on-site, supervising. Then we can finalize the documentation and — ”

“Stop the car.”

“What?”
