“When I spoke to Ms. Davis this morning, she indicated that the drug they are producing could potentially be used as a bio weapon.”

Knightly’s face blanched. “She has a biological weapon? Where is it now?”

“We’ve moved her to a secure government facility. It’s locked up in there.”

Knightly ran a hand across his forehead and took a few steps down the hall. “I guess that explains a few things. And also explains the death of Mr. Popov. If they’re trying to steal a biological weapon, then that means we’ve got big players in this game. Only problem is, we’ve lost our only witness.”

“Maybe. But I have an idea.”

“I’m all ears.”

“Sydney was insistent that no one was supposed to know.”

“I think we’ve proven that’s not true.”

“Exactly.”

“But how does that help us? The only person we had connected to the abduction attempt is dead.”

“He’s not the only one who knew something. Whoever contacted the local paper had at least some details of the research. I think our next move is to find out where the leak came from and speak to them.”

“Good. I’ll take Lewis off the case and assign someone more appropriate.”

“If you don’t mind, I think Lewis will be fine to stay on the case. It’s good experience for him and I can give him some of the running around to do. I like him. He shows initiative. But I’ll still need a team.”

“Wait. You like Lewis? I’m amazed, Pritchard. It’s like you’re a whole new person. Or maybe you’re back to the person you used to be? I haven’t known you long enough to know.”

Aaron shook his head. “I’ll go see Davis and get a list of whoever might have known what the drug could do. It won’t be a very long list. Then I’ll get in touch with the journalist who wrote the story.”

“As I recall, the article had little detail.”

“You’re right. It didn’t say much, but it didn’t come out of thin air either.”

“Keep me posted.”

Syd pressed her fingers to her aching forehead. After countless jaunts back and forth from the loading dock and a box of broken beakers, her new lab was now filled with boxes of her things that still needed to be unpacked.

“You hungry?” Pallon asked, stretching.

“You don’t have to stay.”

“The faster we get this done, the faster we get the answers we’re searching for. If you plan on staying here until you’re unpacked, let me go get you some dinner.”

“Okay, but not too much. I don’t have much of an appetite.”

“Take a painkiller for that headache. By the time I get back, you’ll feel better. Have you drunk any water today?”

“No.”

He turned toward the door. “Where did Amie go? She’s been shadowing us all day and now that I have a job for her to do, she’s vanished.”

“I told her to go home.”

“Oh. Well, I’ll bring you a giant bottle of water with your dinner. Just relax for a bit.”

“Thank, Chris.”
