Once he left the room, she walked to the door and checked to make sure that he was gone. Then she pulled out her phone, sending a text.

Slight change of plans. I’m in a new lab. May create difficulties

She received a message back almost immediately.

What kind of difficulties??

Don’t panic. We always have plan B. Right now it’s just slowed me down. For now let’s just stick to the first plan. Everything is still mostly on schedule. Just a slight delay.

No one knows?

No. No one knows.

She jumped when there was a knock at the door and stuffed her phone in her pocket.

“Mr. Cameron?”

“Didn’t I tell you to call me Myles?”

“You did, sorry. But what are you doing here?” Myles Cameron was a well-built man with perfectly combed hair, and he always wore a dark suit that looked like it was custom-made. He was also the CEO of Biotech.

“Can’t I visit my favorite scientist?”

“I didn’t know you had favorites.”

“You’re all my favorites. After all, you are the reason we stay in business. Ground-breaking science. But I took a gamble on you because I believe in the work you do. I don’t often do that. I didn’t think it would be an inconvenience to visit, especially after the scare you had yesterday.”

“You know about that?”

“I do. Dr. Pallon was kind enough to fill me in on the details. How are you feeling? That must have been frightening.”

“It was, yes. But I’m better now. I’m sorry there isn’t more to see. I haven’t been doing any proper work today because of the move.”

“But besides this little hiccup, I take it everything is progressing well?”

“Yes. More every day.”

He nodded. “So no more dead rats?”

“They were mice. I made some headway the other day. But with everything that’s just happened, progress has slowed, as you would expect.”

Myles crossed the room, unbuttoning his expensive suit jacket. He slipped his hands into his pockets as he walked toward the safe with the fungus in it. Sydney held her breath when he rested his hand on it. “I trust you’ve found the lab to be sufficient?”

“Yes. More than sufficient.”

Myles had only been to the other lab once and didn’t appear interested in being involved other than to receive the reports she and Dr. Pallon sent through. The company he ran might finance her research, but he mostly kept out of their way.

“This place is very secure. I’m safe here.”

“It’s strange that someone would try to kidnap you for your cancer research.”

“It is strange. Maybe someone got the wrong idea. I don’t know if you saw the newspaper article?”

“I did, yes. It was lucky you had the FBI close by.”

“Not luck exactly. Dr. Pallon insisted I get protection.”

Myles’s face twisted. “It was Pallon’s idea?”
