“Hey,” she said when she opened the door. “I didn’t think I would see you again. Sorry about the locked door. I know this place is secure, but I’ve gotten used to it and it makes me feel better, especially when I’m distracted. I can go into a whole other world and have no idea what’s happening around me.”

“Like just then?”

“Yes.”

“That’s amazing focus. Does this mean you’re back to your research?”

“Yeah. Just started. I know it’s late but I wanted to get a few more hours in before I went home.”

“Have you eaten?”

“Yeah, Chris made me.”

“Good.”

“Are you here to take me home?”

“I’ve actually got some questions for you.”

“Oh, okay. What did the Russian say?”

“I didn’t get the chance to question him.”

“Why not?”

“He was dead before I arrived at the hospital.”

“Dead? But I thought he was doing okay.”

“Doctor said it was suicide. It happens sometimes when the guys are fully committed to see the work they’ve been a part of completed, and they don’t want to give anything away.”

Sydney frowned and sat down at the table. “You think he killed himself so he couldn’t tell you anything he knew?”

“That’s what it looks like.”

“That doesn’t make any sense,” she said to herself.

“It happens. We had precautions in place, but sometimes they find a way around.”

“You mean like arsenic in the tooth?”

“Something like that.”

She shook her head. “But still. They were just hired hands, not faithful servants.”

Aaron considered her words and joined her at the table. “What makes you think that?”

“When I was in the van. The things they said. It was clear they didn’t know what was going on. Not really. I couldn’t make out everything they said, but I heard enough to know they were just hired muscle. Are you sure he killed himself?”

“The doctor seemed sure. But if what you say is true, then I’ll fast-track the autopsy.”

Syd picked at her lip. “But if he didn’t kill himself, that means someone killed him to keep him quiet. Doesn’t that make more sense?”

“Yes and no. If they were just hired hands, then why go through the trouble? Hired muscle don’t usually know much. That’s the whole point of using them. You can tell them as little as possible and they’re expendable. Usually they simply get cut loose. Left to flounder with law enforcement on their own. Why go through all the trouble when you could get caught?”

“Would it have been that hard to get in?”

“Well, yeah. We had someone on the door. Everyone who entered the room was recorded and there weren’t many who could even get in the room.”
