“Do you remember scaffolding being up on the outside at any point?”

“Yeah, why?”

“Can you remember when that was?”

“Last year. They were fixing the roof, I think. Why?”

He flipped back to the cover page and noted that she received a grant for her research in the middle of last year.

“Just checking up on some security stuff.”

“What does scaffolding have to do with security?”

“Uh, there may have been tradesmen coming into the building.”

“You think someone would have pretended to be a tradesman and come into my office? You think I was in danger back then? But why wouldn’t they have done anything?”

“It was a long shot.”

“A very long shot. The drug was in the early stages. The side effects weren’t as bad and even fewer people would have known I was working on it back then.”

“I’ve gotta ask all the questions. I don’t like leaving any gaps. Anyway, I’ll get back to work.”

“Oh, okay. That’s it? No more questions?”

“No. That’s it for now.”

“Let me know if you come up with anything. My phone is on.”

“Thanks.”

After hanging up, Aaron went back to the scaffolding picture. No wonder he felt uneasy about this job. He was being kept in the dark.

Aaron slapped the file onto Knightly’s desk while his boss was on the phone.

Knightly lifted his eyebrows, then leaned forward in his chair. “I’ll have to call you back, John.” He hung up the phone and considered Aaron for a moment before he said, “Is there something I can help you with, Pritchard? Barging into my office unannounced isn’t like you.”

“You could start by being straight about what’s going on with Sydney Davis.”

Knightly leaned back in his chair and clasped his hands across his chest. “I’m not sure what you mean.”

“Has the FBI been watching her?”

“As far as I know, you have been keeping an eye on her. Are you feeling okay? Why don’t you sit down?”

“I don’t mean me and you know it.”

“Agent Lewis?”

“Sir, you’ve never been the type to play games. Why start now? I want to know if we had someone on this file before me.”

“Aaron, we received this file just before I gave it to you.”

“From who?”

“I told you. It came from the AG’s office.”
