“This is not a new file. They’ve been watching her since last year, at least.”

“Aaron, look — ”

Aaron put a hand up to stop him. “Hang on. You knew. You already knew that.”

“What difference does it make?”

“It makes a lot of difference. How am I supposed to do my job correctly if I’m not given all the facts? I’ve been running around in the dark and you don’t seem to have a problem with that.”

“After the stunt you pulled with the hostage negotiator, I couldn’t just act like nothing had happened. I couldn’t put you on a big case.”

“Why put me on it at all if you couldn’t give me all the facts?”

“Because you were the right man for the job. You were the only one who could do this thing blindfolded.”

“You could have told me what was going on. I would have kept it between us.”

“I couldn’t.”

“Why not?”

“I was restricted.”

“Restricted by who?”

“Homeland Security.”

“What?”

“They believe that Sydney is involved in a possible threat on American soil.”

“So … what … She’s going to kill civilians by saving them from cancer?”

“The DHS believes the cancer part is just a cover.”

“For what?”

“You already know.”

“Biological weapons? So you already knew about that too?”

“No, not until you told me. They suspected somethin’, but didn’t know she had the product already developed.”

“Knightly, she was almost abducted.”

“Because you allowed yourself a lapse in judgment. But it didn’t matter.”

“No? What if they’d killed her? It wouldn’t have mattered?”

“We don’t believe that her abduction was real. She wasn’t in any danger.”

“Knightly, I was there. I was almost shot.”

“Yeah, you were in danger, but she wasn’t.”

“They were going to cut off her hand.”

“Were they? Or is that what she told you? Either way, it worked out for the best. We got her into a government facility.”
