“Hold it right there,” one guard said after pulling a gun that pointed steadily at Aaron.

“I’m FBI Special Agent Aaron Pritchard.”

“I’ll need to see your ID.”

Aaron set Sydney down, resting her on a chair before pulling out his badge.

“Professor Davis somehow got trapped inside that room with the vacuum running. I found her in there when I entered and I used my sidearm to break the glass. I need to get her to the hospital.”

The guard handed back the badge. “You’ll have to wait a moment while I radio this in.”

“She needs to go now.” He lifted Sydney. “You have my name. You can contact me if you need to, but the professor needs medical attention.”

Pallon came running around the corner and stopped. His face paled. Aaron felt Sydney curl into him with what little strength she had. She tried to say something but her speech slurred.

“Agent Pritchard?” Pallon said.

“You know him?” the guard asked.

“Uh, yeah. W — what happened in here?”

“I was wondering the same thing,” Aaron said.

He had no idea who he could trust in that room, even the woman in his arms. “I’m going to get her to the hospital.”

“But the lab is destroyed,” Chris said, not taking his eyes off Sydney.

“It is. I think the equipment malfunctioned, Dr. Pallon. She got trapped in that room. Almost suffocated.”

“Thank goodness you turned up when you did.” His voice shook.

“Yeah, it was a close call.” He stepped sideways to move past, but Pallon put a hand up.

“Wait. You don’t need to worry yourself with taking her to the hospital. I can do it.”

“She’s under protective custody, remember? I can’t leave her. Don’t worry. I’ll contact you with an update as soon as I can. Am I free to go?” he asked the guard, who nodded.

“We should call an ambulance.” Pallon’s voice came out close to a yell.

“No. I’ll take my car.”

“That’s not a good idea. She needs an ambulance.”

Aaron scooted out of the room.

“Hang on,” Chris said, following.

“Not now, Dr. Pallon.”

“No. You need to stop.”

“Not going to happen. Now back away or I’ll pull my weapon.”

“You’re making a big mistake.”

“I can live with that.” He didn’t know what to make of this turn of events, but one thing was clear: He needed to get her out of there before he could get answers.

This time, Sydney was most certainly almost murdered. There was no faking anything. Whether she’d become a liability or there were other players involved, he had been ordered to keep her alive and he had to focus on that for now.
