“Chris,” Sydney whispered as Aaron carried her outside. “It was Chris.”

“I know. You can get to the specifics later, but right now we need to get out of here in one piece.”

“No, you need to stop him.”

“Your life is more important right now.”

“He has the fungus.”

Aaron had forgotten about the open safe. “He got the bio weapon?”

“Yeah.”

“Okay. I’ll deal with that in a second. He’s in a government facility. He’s not going anywhere yet.”

He slid her into the back seat, then pulled out his phone and sent a text before starting the car.

Code black. Expect me in a few hours.

When he reached the gate, the guard came out to meet him without lifting the boom.

“Sir, I received a request asking you to remain on the premises,” the guard said.

“I’m not sure why. Professor Davis has had an accident, and I need to get her to the hospital. And Dr. Pallon needs to be taken into custody until further notice.”

“We have medical staff on-site, sir. They’d like her to be assessed here.”

“I’m sorry, but that’s not possible.”

“Then I’m sorry, because I can’t let you pass. I’ve got my orders.”

Aaron pressed his lips together. Something was wrong. “Okay. If that’s what’s required.”

“Thank you, sir. If you pull back around to the front of the building, they’ll have someone waiting.”

Aaron nodded. Then, when the guard moved out of the way, he put his foot down and crashed through the boom gate. He heard Sydney grunt in the back.

“Sorry about this. It’s going to get a bit rough. Don’t suppose you can sit up and put your seatbelt on?”

She groaned but lifted herself up and did as he asked.

In the rearview mirror he could see they had at least one vehicle on them.

“We’ve got company so I’m going to have to lose him. Then we’ll need to ditch this car as soon as we can. I hope you don’t get carsick.”

He yanked the steering wheel hard and the car spun sideways moving onto another street and toward the city.

His phone rang. It was his boss.

“Knightly. I was just about to call you.”

“Pritchard, where are you?”

“On the road.”

“I just got an urgent phone call saying you went AWOL with the suspect.”

“I wouldn’t call it AWOL, they’re right behind me. They know exactly where I am. For now at least.” Aaron dodged around some cars and checked in the mirror to see the other vehicle do the same.
