“We can’t drive this car. I need to steal one.”

“Aren’t FBI agents allowed to do that in an emergency?”

“Under normal circumstances. But I’m suspended, so I’m going to have to make up for it. Wait here.”

Aaron checked several cars before deciding on one. He pulled it around and stopped behind his own car where Sydney joined him.

“What happens now?” she asked, buckling her seatbelt.

“Now? We hide.”

Chapter17

The sky was speckledwith stars when they pulled into a long driveway.

“You trust this guy?” Sydney squeezed her hands between her knees to stop them shaking.

“I already told you.”

“I know, but yesterday I would have told you I trusted Chris.”

“This is different.”

“Why?”

“For one thing, I’ve known him a long time. We’ve saved each other’s lives on more than one occasion.”

“I hope you’re right.”

“I wouldn’t bring you here unless I was sure.”

“You still haven’t told me why I’m a suspect.”

“We can talk about that later.”

“Please, can we talk about it now?”

“In situations like these, everyone is a suspect. No matter how innocent they look. You’re the only one with access to the bio weapon. At least you were.”

“But I would never use it that way.”

“Knightly needs to be convinced.”

“Then convince him.”

A two-story cozy-looking cabin appeared out of the blackness ahead. Several windows were lit up with a warm glow. The dark shape of a barn loomed in the shadows beyond the house. And even in the dim light, it was clear to see that the lawn and gardens were well maintained.

“We’ll talk about this later,” Aaron said as he parked the car.

“Fine.” She breathed out a shaky breath. “You’re sure this guy won’t turn you in? You said you trust that your boss isn’t connected, but you can’t trust even him right now.”

“These guys are not connected to the FBI or any other government organization.” Aaron turned off the car.

“Okay. But this still makes me nervous.”

“I understand. You’ve been through a lot. But this is the safest place I know to go. Once you meet them, you’ll feel better. If there is one man I know I can trust with my life, it’s Peter Black.”

Aaron got out and headed toward the front door, not checking to see if Sydney followed. She looked around into the dark forest that surrounded them. There was no way out of here. If Aaron couldn’t be trusted, or if his friends couldn’t be, then she was already as good as dead.
