She got out of the car and slowly made her way to the front door where Aaron waited for her to join him. But as she edged up the steps, she noticed a car parked around the side of the house. She looked at Aaron and saw he had noticed it too.

“What is it?” she said in response to the worried look on his face.

“Peter isn’t a Mercedes kind of guy.” He took her arm and pulled her behind him, then put a hand on his gun, pulling it free of the holster before he knocked.

The door swung open and a woman’s questioning face appeared. But her furrowed brow quickly dissolved into a beaming smile. “Aaron. You got here quicker than expected.” She grabbed him and pulled him into a tight hug.

“Everything okay here, Jemi?”

“Yeah. Why?” She looked down at his arm that was tucked behind his back. “You were expecting trouble?”

“You can never be too careful.” Aaron holstered the gun and Jemi’s eyes darted across Aaron’s shoulder to Sydney.

“You’ve brought a friend?”

“Sydney Davis, I’d like you to meet Jemila Black. She’s Peter’s wife.”

Aaron put a hand on Sydney’s arm to bring her forward, but she didn’t move. “That still doesn’t explain the car,” she whispered.

“What car?” Jemi asked.

“I thought Peter liked to keep a low profile, that’s all,” Aaron said. “We’re jumpy after the ordeal we’ve been through.”

“No kidding. When you said ‘code black’ in your message, I had hoped it wasn’t as serious as that, but it sounds like it is. I can’t wait to hear about it.”

“And the car?”

“That’s not ours.”

“Whose is it?”

“Youarejumpy. Why don’t you come in and see?”

Sydney stayed behind Aaron. She wished he still had his gun in his hand. He might trust these people, but she didn’t trust anyone right now. She wasn’t even sure she could trust Aaron.

Jemi led them through the entry hall and into the living room, where they found Peter and two others.

Aaron smiled in surprise. “Solomon?”

Sol stood. “Aaron, it’s good to see you again. Peter told me you were coming. You remember Bec?”

Aaron put a hand to his cheek. “Yes. It’s hard to forget a kick to the face.”

Bec tsked. “I can’t believe that’s the thing you remember about me. Of all the things.”

“That’s not the only thing. I also remember you did a pretty good job of getting Sol out of a tight spot. You fully recovered from that gunshot wound?”

“Yes, thankfully.”

Aaron nodded. “This is Sydney.”

Sydney smiled uncomfortably at the group.

“So who is it that’s in trouble here?” Peter asked.

“Where do I start?” Aaron said. “We’re both fugitives at the moment.”

“Should you be telling them that?” Sydney said under her breath.
