“It shouldn’t take that long. I know what I’m doing now.”

“But how long can you put Biotech off? They’re looking for results.”

“They’ll just have to wait.”

Pallon rubbed his hand across his mouth, thinking. “What if we gave them what we have?”

Sydney’s face darkened. “You can’t be serious. They gave us funding for a cancer treatment and what we have is a weapon.”

“You’re being dramatic.”

“Am I? You know full well what we have.”

“I do, but not every corporation has evil schemes to kill people. How they decide to use it is up to them.”

“I can’t believe I’m hearing this.”

“Okay, forget it. I’m just trying to find a solution where we can all move forward.”

“The only way forward is for me to fix this. If you can’t get on board with me on that, then you should request to be removed from this project.”

“Now you really are being dramatic. I was just thinking out loud. Forget about what I said and tell me what I can do to help. If you give me half your workload, we’ll breeze through this.”

She pursed her lips and he put his hands up. “Okay, I concede that giving Biotech your current research is a bad move, but letting me help is not a bad idea.”

“Chris, I don’t want to have this conversation again.”

Pallon took his glasses off and rubbed his eyes. “Fine, do it all yourself.”

“Chris.”

“Sorry. I’ve had a rough couple of days with my own stuff.”

Sydney looked down at her fingers fiddling with the hem of her lab coat. “Now I’m sorry. I’ve been so focused on my own research I haven’t asked you once about what you're working on. That’s terrible.”

“No, it’s not. I’ve just had some bad results, but I think I have it sorted out now.”

“Do you want to talk about it?”

“No. It would bore you senseless. Your work is much more interesting.”

Sydney turned back to her screen and brought up a second program on the computer. “Now that I know where to focus my energy, I should make some progress within the next few weeks.”

Pallon yanked her chair back and spun it around.

“You’ve been at this all morning. You need a break.”

“Hey, you’re my supervisor, not my boss.”

“I’m here to look after your project, and that means looking after you. You’ll get further if you take a break.”

She wanted to protest, but her back and shoulders were stiff and the pressure behind her eyes was developing into a headache. “Okay, but just a small one. I’ve got a lot to do.”

“Would you do me a favor?”

“What?”

“Don’t give me an answer now, just reconsider my offer to help. You can trust me. Give more of this over to me. That’s what I’m here for.”
