“Don’t worry about it, Syd,” Sol said. “Aaron broke me out of an FBI lockup so we’re used to him going rogue. You’re safe here.”

“I hope so.”

“She’s been through a lot tonight,” Aaron said. “And now she’s surrounded by strangers.”

“You don’t have to talk about me like I’m not here.” She didn’t want to trust any of them, but the fear that had threatened to paralyze her had melted away inexplicably, and she was tired of fighting it. “I’m sorry we interrupted your evening.”

“Don’t be. There’s nothing more important than this,” Bec said, standing.

“And that’s another reason I’m marrying this girl,” Sol said.

“You guys are getting married? That’s great.” Aaron shook Sol’s hand. “Congratulations.”

Peter stood with the rest of them and stretched. “I tell you what, there have been so many weddings in the last couple of years.” He looked between Aaron and Syd. “It’s like God decided it’s time for all my guys to settle down. Maybe bring on the next generation.”

“Whoa,” Sol said. “Let’s not jump ahead of ourselves.”

“Well, Liam and Emily are expecting their first any day now.”

Sol snickered. “Honeymoon baby. I don’t think that was on purpose.”

Jemi directed Sydney to the couch. “Why don’t you have a seat? I imagine you’re very stressed. Can I get you anything to eat or drink?”

“Thank you. I’m actually starving, so if you have a snack or something — ”

“You rest. I’ll be back.”

Aaron turned his attention to Sol. “What are you guys doing here, anyway?”

“Wedding,” Bec said.

“Oh, you’re here because you’re getting married?”

“We’re having it here this weekend.”

Aaron saw Peter’s eyes make another quick sweep between him and Sydney. Whether Peter meant for him to see it, he didn’t know. He caught the meaning but didn’t like the squirm in his stomach. It warmed him and it shouldn’t.

“Don’t let us stop your preparations. We need to lie low while I get to the bottom of what’s going on.”

“I thought you said the new special agent in charge was a good guy,” Peter said.

“He is. Knightly’s straight down the line.”

“So why haven’t you gone to him?”

“We escaped from a government-run research facility by charging down the boom gate, and now we’re suspected of stealing a bio weapon. So I’m not confident about where I stand at the moment. And Sydney’s supervisor tried to murder her. He’s a well-respected scientist.”

Sol whistled. “You sure know how to get in deep. Don’t tell me you’ve got another group of corrupt government employees and officials to take care of? Because I am all in for another round of that.”

“I don’t know what I have. That’s why I’m here.”

“I’m in too,” Bec said.

“Hang on a minute,” Sol said. “I’m all for helping, as long as you understand that I will be married to you by the time this weekend is over.”

“That’s sweet,” Bec said.

“I’m not trying to be sweet. I’m just being straight.”
