“Yeah.” His voice was quiet.

“When I left my office that afternoon and Leo was there on the steps, I was sick. Terrified. I thought he had come to tell me he wanted me back and wouldn’t take no for an answer. Then he appeared surprised to see me. He said he was lost and couldn’t believe he’d run into me.”

“And you believed him?”

“I was too afraid not to. It was a small glimmer of hope I could hang on to. He made some joke that he thought was funny, so I laughed because I was afraid of him and what he was capable of.”

“And that was it?”

“He asked me to dinner. I almost said yes because I didn’t think I was brave enough to say no. Then I prayed and asked God for help and somehow I turned him down.”

“And?”

“And he walked away like it was no big deal. I was so relieved.”

“And that was it?”

“I thought so, but if there is a picture, then obviously he was there for another reason. You can believe me or not. There’s not much I can do either way. But I’ve got nothing else to say about it.”

If it weren’t for the emails, he would have fallen for it. Everything she had just said made perfect sense. But she continued to lie.

“That doesn’t explain the emails.”

“What emails?”

Aaron looked at the floor. “You know what emails I’m talking about.”

“No, actually, I don’t.”

“Come on, Sydney. I’m tired of playing games with you.”

“Is that what we’ve been doing?”

“I came on this job to keep you safe and you’ve been manipulating me since the day I turned up.”

“I’vebeen manipulating you? From the first moment you got on this job, you wanted off. More than anything else I wanted you to — ” She turned away from him and faced out the window.

“Wanted me to what?”

“Never mind. It doesn’t matter.”

“Sydney. There is something going on that you are not telling me.”

“You think I’m lying about my involvement with the Russians?”

He sat and rested his forehead in his hand. “I honestly don’t know what to think. You have a good explanation for everything else, but there are still the emails.”

She turned to him. “I don’t know what emails you’re talking about. Did you find something of Dr. Pallon’s?”

“Not his. Yours.”

Sydney’s eyes widened, then closed as she breathed out in defeat. She didn’t speak right away, but it was clear he’d finally gotten through.

“How did you get access to my emails?”

“I wasn’t a part of that. They must have gotten a warrant. But explain to me how those emails have nothing to do with the Russians.”

“I swear to you they have nothing to do with the Russians.”
