“You’re serious?”

“Of course I’m serious. I don’t know what kind of person you think I’ve become. I’ve made plenty of mistakes in my life, but I would never do anything to endanger the lives of thousands of people. You really think I’m capable of that? That’s what you’ve been thinking all this time, that I’m selling a biological weapon to the highest bidder?”

“What else am I supposed to believe when you’ve been lying to me this whole time?”

“I haven’t been lying. Those emails have nothing to do with using the fungus as a weapon.”

“Then tell me what those emails are about. Because they made it quite clear that you were going to give your research to someone who wasn’t supposed to have it.”

She huffed down into her seat, exhausted. “I was. But only the cancer treatment.”

“What?”

“I was going to destroy everything else once I had the treatment worked out. Just like I told you before.”

“But I thought Biotech had already funded your research for exclusive rights.”

“They had. I signed the contract. It was a mistake.”

“You’re going to have to be more specific.”

“When Biotech Solutions offered to fund the research, I should have said no. I did say no in a way. Anyone would have killed to have a company like them fund research. It was a dream come true, but not my dream.”

“Then why did you say yes?”

“I knew in my gut that I should decline, but I was embarrassed. How could I reject such a great offer? Anyone would be mad to say no. So I made a bunch of stipulations that I was certain they wouldn’t agree to.”

“But they did.”

“Yes. I still knew it wasn’t right. I prayed about it over and over, hoping I would get a clear green light from God to go with them.”

“But he didn’t give you clarity?”

“No, he definitely gave me clarity. It just wasn’t the answer I wanted. He gave me a clear warning. Didn’t change his mind. So I made excuses that it was too late. I shut down everything inside of me that was trying to lead me and I signed on the dotted line.”

“So who is in South America?”

“A nonprofit organization. They got in touch with me literally the day after I’d signed. They wanted to work with me. They had some funding. Not as much as Biotech, but it would have been enough.”

“It was what you had always wanted.”

“Yeah. But it was too late.”

“Why didn’t you tell me?”

“That I intended to break a contract I signed? I have not stopped feeling humiliated for my mistakes and I could get into big trouble. I will get into trouble. Maybe go to prison.”

“You should have told me.”

“I couldn’t. I made the wrong choice, and I’ve been trying to make it right ever since.”

“By breaking the contract you signed? You felt that was the right thing?”

“No. I didn’t. I don’t. But I made the mess, so I’m trying to fix it. I just haven’t done a very good job.”

“So you were going to give it to this South American company instead of Biotech?”

“I was going to give it to both and accept whatever consequences came my way. I figured I deserved it and I’d accept it. At least I’d have helped cancer patients. I guess I deserve all of this too. Everything that’s happening is my own making.”
