“No. He had cancer and my mom begged me to see him when they didn’t expect him to live, but I wouldn’t. Now he’s miraculously better, and facing him is even harder than before. I came to terms with his death. I was relieved. But I don’t know what to be now.”

“I bet God has some ideas. Now that you’re on speaking terms with him again.”

“You don’t stop, do you?”

“It’s a tough job, but someone has to do it. But you’ve probably been through enough for one night. You should get some sleep.”

“Yeah.”

“Then in the morning we can pray.”

“Unrelenting.” Aaron laughed as he left the room.

Chapter20

The next morningBec found Sydney sitting alone on the back porch drinking a coffee.

“Hey. I was hoping to get a chance to sit down with you,” Bec said.

“Really? Why?”

“I thought you seemed like a fascinating person. I wanted to get to know you better.”

“I don’t think I’m as interesting as you think I am. I spend a lot of time in the lab poring over results.”

“I don’t know. Finding cures and helping people sounds pretty cool.”

“I do like it. What do you do?”

“I used to run a bar, but I converted it into a sort of homeless shelter, kitchen type place. I run it with a friend of mine who used to work with me at the bar.”

“That sounds rewarding.”

“I do have some stories to tell, but lately Sol’s been pulling me away to join him on his jobs. For a guy who was used to working on his own, he sure finds a lot of ways to bring me along.”

“What does he do?”

“Contract work with the FBI mostly.”

“Sounds like he loves you very much.”

“He’s amazing. But it will be easier once we’re married.”

“Why?”

Bec’s face reddened. “We’re trying to do things the right way and that’s not always easy.”

“Oh. I see.” Sydney laughed. “Good luck.”

“So you said you’re onto a big breakthrough with your work?”

“I am, but it’s like it’s just out of reach. It was so easy and then suddenly it wasn’t. I’m trying everything, but the harder I try, the worse things get. It drives me crazy. It’s like every time I turn a corner, something else turns up to skew the results in some crazy way.”

“When did that start happening?”

“When I got the funding.” She huffed a cynical laugh. “I thought the money would fix all of my problems.”

“Is that when you started doing things your own way?”
