“That’s why the Russians were after her?”

“Not exactly. Pallon knew what they had and I believe he told Biotech. She wouldn’t share her research with anyone, so they tried to get it another way.”

“But then why would he ask for protection for her?”

“Maybe they didn’t think the FBI was up to the task. He was almost right. But why ask me? Why not ask him yourself?”

“We did speak to him. But we had nothing to hold him on.”

“Wait. You’re telling me he’s not in custody? What about the bioweapon?”

“He didn’t have it. Said it was still in the safe where Sydney put it. She’s the only one with the code, so if anyone took it out, it was her.”

“But the safe was open.”

“Not when we checked.”

Aaron squeezed the bridge of his nose. “Sir. Pallon tried to kill Sydney. He threatened her life, so she gave him the code. When I turned up, she was locked inside the room with the air being sucked out and the safe was open.”

The line was silent for a moment. “Aaron. I really wish you would have come in from the beginning. We couldn’t hold Pallon. We had nothing on him. You need to get back here.”

“You can guarantee Sydney’s safety?”

“Aaron.”

“I won’t bring her in if I can’t be sure she’ll be safe. She’s willing to cooperate.”

“Okay. Get her in here so we can get this sorted out. How long will it take you to get here?”

“It’ll be a few hours. We’ll leave now.”

Aaron tossed the phone back to Peter. “Sorry, but we’ve gotta get going. Where’s Sydney?”

“She’s gone,” Jemi said.

“What? When?”

“Before you came down.”

“Do you know where she went?”

“She said she wouldn’t be long. She took your car. Said she’d made a commitment to the company funding her work. She wanted to go to them to make things right. Has something happened? Can you wait for her to get back?”

“No. Peter, I’m going to need to borrow your car. Sydney’s in trouble. The man she’s going to see is the one who tried to abduct her. She’s going to apologize to the man who wants her dead.”

“I’m coming with you.” Peter stood up from the table, followed by Sol.

“I’ll come too,” he said.

“Wait. If you’re going, I’m going,” Bec said.

“No, you’re not. It’s not safe.”

“Excuse me? Since when has that been an issue? I’ve been through several life-and-death events with you. What’s one more? And don’t forget that I helped save you from a highly secure FBI lockup. You guys need me. Besides, Aaron helped us out. We can help him out. ”

Jemi grabbed Peter’s keys off the bench. “You guys are wasting time arguing, and I’m not staying here on my own. So let’s go.”

“Fine, but I’m driving,” Aaron said.
