“I’m afraid I’ll chicken out. I agreed to give a company exclusive rights to my work and I’ve been going back on my word the whole time. I need to make it right.”

“Okay. I’ll be praying for you.”

“Thank you.” She ran up to Jemi and gave her a hug. “That’s exactly what I need because I can’t do this without his help. I won’t be long. The head office is only a couple of hours from here.”

“Good luck.”

Aaron stretched as he ambled down the stairs. He had slept in. Something he never did. He rubbed a hand down his face when he thought back to the kiss. If it hadn’t been for the emotional ordeal he had been through after that, he probably never would have slept. But he was so exhausted, when his head hit the pillow, he knew nothing else until the sun streamed through the window.

He found everyone but Sydney sitting around a big table. Peter’s phone rang as Aaron joined them.

“Syd still sleeping?” Aaron asked.

“She didn’t tell you?” Jemi said.

“Tell me what?”

Peter held out his phone toward Aaron. “It’s for you.”

Aaron looked at the phone. “Who is it?”

“He said his name was Victor Knightly.”

Aaron’s eyes widened and he took the phone, putting it slowly to his ear. “Knightly? How’d you find me?”

“Do you think I’m an idiot? I’ve got resources available to me, or have you forgotten that I am capable of doing my own due diligence on my guys? This isn’t the first number I called, but I haven’t been at it for long.”

“Please don’t tell me you’ve got the house surrounded already.”

“No. I expect you to bring yourself in. And don’t forget Sydney.”

“If you take us into custody now, we’re as good as dead.”

“I’m not arresting you. I need your help. You were right keeping Lewis on the case. He’s got a nose for it. He looked into this company that financed Sydney’s research.”

“He’s found something?”

“The board of directors includes the Russians we’ve been monitoring. They’re working together, but we need to talk to Sydney and find out who’s involved.”

“She’s not involved.”

“Aaron. I hope you haven’t made this case personal.”

He couldn’t truthfully say he hadn’t. “It has nothing to do with personal. Leo is an ex-boyfriend of hers. I believe he was trying to take her in when that photo was taken, but she wouldn’t go.”

“Then explain the emails.”

“Get Lewis to look into it if you need to.”

“I have.”

“And is there a Russian connection?”

“Not that we’ve been able to find.”

“That’s because there isn’t one. It’s a nonprofit company she’s been communicating with because she wants to give them her cancer treatment once she’s got it across the line. She’d be going against the contract she signed with Biotech, so she didn’t want anyone to know.”
