“You’ll find out. One day, you’ll realize that caring is useless, and you will hope only for death. Trust me. It’s easier than being afraid.”

“That’s a terrible existence.”

“I agree. Is it really true that this Will Fitler was looking for Kelly?”

“Yeah.”

“He must have been good man.”

“Yeah.” She dropped her head. “He was.”

“I sometimes wonder how long my family looked for me before they gave up.”

“How do you know they’re not still looking?”

“You and your hope again, eh? Is it because you’re religious?”

“What?”

“I heard you praying.”

“Oh. Yes.”

“My family is Catholic, but I don’t think I’ve ever prayed before. You asked God for boldness. I can tell you right now that boldness will not help you in here. It will only get you beaten.”

“I know.”

“I don’t think you do. They treat us bad enough when we’re submissive. You don’t want to make it worse. But I’ve heard stories, and if, by some miracle, God comes through and rescues you, will you take me with you?”

“Of course. If I have the chance to save all of you, I will.”

“Even Kelly?”

“Especially Kelly.”

“But you said Will is dead.”

“And I’ll save her to honor his memory.”

“That’s very noble.”

“It has nothing to do with being noble.”

“You cared for him?”

“I did.”

After a few minutes of silence, Sabrina said, “I will pray too.”

Emotion caught in the back of Charlotte’s throat. It had been the last thing she expected Sabrina to say. “You will?”

“Why not? Maybe God will listen more if there are more of us asking. If we bother Him enough, He may give in just to shut us up.” She laughed.

“Thank you.” Charlotte reached out for Sabrina’s hand, but she pulled away.

“I’m not your friend here. Don’t misunderstand. There is no friendship in this place. When God does not answer our prayers and the hunger is too much for me, I’ll knock your teeth out to steal your bread.”

“I understand.”
