She is in me, and I am in her. I leave the ninety-nine to save the one.

“What are you saying? You’ll leave her to die to come give me a hard time? So this is my fault?”

I will never leave her nor forsake her.

“And what about my dad? You didn’t save him.”

He didn’t need saving. He was found. You’re lost. But you know that already.

The finality of the statement settled on her chest. She’d been running away her whole life, and when she thought about where she’d ended up, God was right. She was lost. She hadn’t ended up at a destination she’d always been searching for. She was wandering around in a wilderness always searching for the one thing she refused to receive.

Closing her eyes, she took several shallow breaths before she could get the words out. “Fine. I’ll give my life to You if You promise to save my sister.”

Salvation is a free gift. You either receive it or you don’t.

She’d spent her life trying to make up for what she saw as God’s failings. Receiving anything from Him was a trial. It meant admitting that what He had to give was valuable. Her stubbornness grated on her nerves. She wanted to break through it, but she couldn’t. Her mind said to yield, but something deeper stopped her.

“How do I get through this when I’m warring against myself?”

It takes a death to be reborn. Do you want to remain the person you are?

“No.”

Then surrender.

Her eyelids squeezed, and a single tear dripped down her face. She knew the only way she could truly surrender was if He helped her to do it. This was the one thing she couldn’t do herself. It would be a sign to her He was real and His power was real because it wasn’t possible for her to give in the way He required.

She breathed deeply. “Okay.” She considered her life one more time and recognized that she had nothing left to lose. What she was giving up was a pile of filth. Everything about her life that she’d gripped so tightly to and been terrified of losing was nothing. If she had been killed on the roof that night, none of this would even matter.

“There’s nothing left for me in my old life.” She stepped into the unknown. “I’ll give it to you. It’s yours.”

She laid still, waiting for something dramatic to happen. At first, she felt nothing new, and a moment of despair pricked her. But then, a deep peace pervaded her mind and slid down her body, spreading to the knot that had lived within her for years. It began to unravel, and tears spilled down her face as she poured everything out at His feet. For a moment, she considered what she must look like, crying like a baby. If the doctor walked in, he’d be concerned, forcing her to take more medication. But she found she didn’t care.

A joy filled her heart that she’d never known before, and her eyes opened as she considered it. She’d never imagined what she’d been missing. Even the pain in her body, although it was still there, had diminished.

If she could have slipped out of bed and gotten onto her knees, she would have.

But that would have to wait. Right now, her sister needed her. She cried out to the God who had made a home inside her heart. She asked Him for a miracle and gave him all of her fear, trusting that He alone was in control.

Chapter27

Willand Peter listened at the door of Antonio’s room but could hear nothing from inside.

Peter nodded, then inserted the key card into the door, standing to the side as Will charged into the room with Peter close behind, their guns raised. Two guards who had been sitting stood drawing their weapons, but Will and Peter fired first.

More shots erupted from inside the bedroom, and they dove for cover.

After a brief volley, silence filled the room.

Will changed position so he could see Peter. Then, he tapped the top of his head with his hand and nodded.

Peter nodded back, then fired two more rounds into the air so Will could move in on Antonio.

He dove into the bedroom, scanning the area as he went. He held his position beside the bed, then fired his weapon under it where he had seen Antonio crouched.

Antonio yelped. “Stop. Don’t shoot.” He held his gun high, then tossed it.

Peter entered the room aiming his weapon as Will stood.
