“Silencio,” she whispered to each of them as she went. “If any of you make a sound, we’re all dead.”

“It’s your miracle,” Sabrina said to Charlotte as she rubbed her naked wrist.

“Yours too. Come on. Let’s get you back to your family.”

A soft rustle filled the room as everyone got to their feet, but other than that, they made no sound.

Charlotte put her arm around a woman who was having trouble walking, and Sabrina joined her so they could move faster.

In the hall, a guard was slumped in a chair next to the door, snoring. She left the injured woman with Sabrina so she could keep an eye on the man as they filed past. If he woke, she’d have to make sure he couldn’t raise an alarm. Somehow. Maddy would know what to do. But Maddy wasn’t here.

Don’t let him wake up.

Once everyone had passed through to the main room, Charlotte followed quickly. She was the last one outside, and she found Kelly waiting at the door.

“Why are they all standing around?” Charlotte asked her as she pulled her down the street.

“They don’t know what to do with freedom. Most of them have nowhere to go.”

Charlotte planted her feet to stop Kelly from dragging her any farther. “They can come with us.” She found Sabrina among the crowd and waved her over.

“No. No way. I got them free, but now they’re on their own.”

“Kelly—”

“No. None of this was my idea.”

“What do you mean?”

“I don’t want this. I never wanted to be a part of this, but I had no choice.”

Charlotte made a fist at her side. “This is a trap?”

“No.” She grunted. “That’s not what I mean. I don’t know why I went in there tonight to save you. I can’t explain it. I’ll get you to the city, but that’s all I’ll do for you. You’re on your own after that. And I’m not helping anyone else.”

Shouting erupted from inside the building.

“No.” Kelly stared at the door. “It’s too late.”

“Run!” Charlotte yelled to Sabrina, who took off around the corner.

A few others made it, but the rest fumbled around the street in fear, cowering when shots were fired.

Kelly dropped beside her before they could make their escape.

Charlotte fell to her knees beside her. “Kelly?”

“Run,” she mouthed. “Go. Before it’s too late.”

“No.” Charlotte found the wound on her side and pressed on it, then looked up to see there were others laying in the street. Four of their captors began rounding up those still alive.

She focused back on Kelly. They had been so close to freedom. Why hadn’t she run away when she had the chance?

“I tried,” Kelly gasped.

“You did great. You saved some of them.”

“Not you.”
