“But now we’ll never find her.” He lowered his weapon slowly. “She’s gone. I’ve lost her.”

“I know Antonio was our best shot, but we can still check the local area around the airport.”

“You heard him. She could be anywhere.” Will slumped onto the couch.

“Now’s not the time to give up hope.”

“I’ve fought so many years, clutching at one small strand of hope. I’m sorry, Peter, but I think it broke. I have nothing left to cling to.”

“You don’t have to. I can hold on a little longer for the both of us.”

He pulled Will from the seat and put his arm around him, leading him out of the room.

Charlie thrashed as she took a tumble in her dream.

“Hey, watch it,” a voice hissed in the darkness.

A figure hovered over her, and Charlotte opened her mouth to call out in alarm when a hand pressed against her lips.

A face drew close to hers.

“Kelly?” she murmured through the hand that silenced her.

“Shh. Don’t make a sound, or you’ll wake the guard.”

“What are you doing?”

“Getting you out of here.”

“Why?”

Kelly moved back and frowned. “I don’t know.” She paused, then added. “Are you coming or not?”

“Not without the others.”

Kelly glanced back at the door. “There’s no time. I can’t help them. There are too many. They’ll make too much noise.”

Around the room, some girls had stirred and were watching the exchange, including Sabrina.

“Are you coming or not?” Kelly said. “I can leave you here if you prefer.”

“I—”God what do I do? How can I leave them?“Give me a second.”

“We don’t have a second. It’s now or never.” She undid Charlotte’s shackles.

“Give me the keys.”

“Why?”

“You go. I’ll release the others and meet you somewhere.”

“You won’t make it.”

“I have to try.”

Kelly grumbled but kept the keys. She moved along the line, unlocking everyone.
