“How did she sound? Was she scared?”

“She sounded excited.”

“Well, whoever these ladies are, we’re going to send them flowers or a card or a million dollars or something. Anything.”

“I’m so proud of her right now.”

Will entered the room. “Afternoon, ladies.” He glanced at Charlotte but focused on Maddy. “How’re you feeling?”

“Amazing. I found out my mom is going out for brunch.”

“Wow. Brunch…Actually, no, I don’t get it. What’s so great about brunch?”

“Surely I’ve told you she battles anxiety.”

“Oh, yeah. Sorry, that is amazing. This is new, I take it?”

“The last time she ate out was probably when our dad was still alive.”

“Congratulations to her. That’s a nice addition to the other news.”

“What other news?”

“About you getting out of here.”

“Yes! Finally—what’s that look for?”

“Nothing. But I wonder if it’s wise. The bed rest has done you some good. It’s a shame to see it end.”

“Don’t be a jerk. I was beginning to think the day would never come. But there is one tiny hitch.”

“What’s that?”

“I’m beingforcedto take time off.”

“How dare they.”

“I know. Something to do with recovery and physiotherapy. Sounds awful. I only agreed because I can’t stand being here anymore. What about you? What have they got you doing now that our operation is finished?”

“Art forgeries.”

“Art? You don’t know anything about art.”

“No, and I don’t need to. I’m the rich fool buying the paintings. I’m not supposed to know much. I’ve got a briefing with Turner in a couple of days, so I’ll find out the particulars then.”

“Who’s your partner on the job?”

“Don’t know. No one as amazing as you, I’m sure. I’ll miss having you around.”

“No you won’t. You’ll be glad to see the other side of me after the trouble I caused you.”

“True, but I wouldn’t have it any other way. You’re a good undercover operative. Once you’re recovered, we might see if we can’t wrangle another assignment together. We made a great team until you got yourself beat up. I can’t believe you let Antonio sucker you in.”

“Shut up. It worked out okay in the end. Turns out my baby sister—”

“By four minutes.” Charlotte gave her an exasperated look.

Maddy shrugged. “Still. You did good. I’m proud of you.”
