“Can we see her?” Will said.

“Soon.” He looked at the floor in thought. “I heard about what happened. I’m glad we could save her.”

“You’ll let us know when we can see her?”

“As soon as she’s awake, I’ll come get you.”

It was another hour before they let Will and Charlotte see Kelly. Will entered the room first, and her face crumpled in tears. Even in recovery, she recognized him.

“Will—Is it really you? She said you were dead.”

“I almost was. Kelly—” He sat close to the bed and took her hand, pressing it against his mouth. “I never stopped looking. I prayed for you every day.”

“Why?”

“Because I care about you very much.”

“No. I mean, why’d you pray for me for so long?”

“I never would have found you without them.”

“But I don’t deserve it.”

“That’s not true.”

“I’m sorry I left. You were right all along. You were the only one who knew what he really was.”

“It doesn’t matter anymore. All I care about is that you're safe now, and I can bring you home.”

“Thank you.”

Will began to shake as long-held-back tears came. He leaned over Kelly, holding her tightly.

Charlotte let her own tears fall freely. God never gave up on them.

Chapter28

“That sounds great,”Charlotte said into her phone. “You have fun. Bye.”

She was sitting beside Maddy’s bed in the hospital, now staring at her phone in amazement.

“Did you just say, ‘have fun’ to Mom?” Maddy said.

“I did.”

“I don’t get it.”

“She’s going out for brunch.”

“Mom.”

“Yeah.”

“That’s impossible.”

“Apparently she’s found this great group of ladies who have been by her side helping her take small steps to get back out into the world. She said they started having brunch in the house, then they moved her out onto the porch, and today she’s going to a small café in town. According to Mom, they make spectacular cinnamon buns.”
