“No. Forensics has it. I should get it back soon.”

Charlotte pulled her own phone out and brought up the camera, handing it to Maddy.

“Gross. Idolook bad.”

“Yeah. You really do. Sorry. I’m the pretty one now.”

“I thought you were here to make me feel better.”

“You told me not to lie.”

Maddy handed back the phone. “At least I can stop pestering Will.”

“Is there anything I can do to help?”

“Like what? You want to go undercover in my place since you’re so good at that sort of stuff? Sorry. It’s this smart mouth of mine. You were the one who was always well-behaved.”

“Would it help if I was more specific in my offer? Do you need me to go to your apartment and get anything? You want any magazines? Maybe I can get you some tabloids. I know how much you secretly love those.”

“You may as well kill me now.”

The sisters shared a smile.

“Seriously, though. Is there anything you need? Anything. I want to help if I can.”

“Thanks, but no. I’ve got everything covered. Hey, how was Mom, by the way? Did she sound okay? She called here, but I didn’t speak to her. I wasn’t up to it.”

“No. You would have found that difficult. She sounded like her usual self. Panicking. Expecting the worst. I calmed her down, but you know how it is for her.”

“I wish she could get over this.”

“She will. You remember how she used to be? We have to remember that, even though things are still bad, she’s better than she was.”

“Is she?”

“She has a lot of friends around her who are doing their best to help her.”

“Yeah, church friends. More praying. A lot of good they’re doing. Listen,” she sighed, “I might close my eyes for a bit. I don’t mind if you hang around, but only if you want to. You should feel free to go home if you want. It’s up to you. Will said the coffee’s not terrible if you want to go get one.”

Because Maddy’s eyes were closed, Charlotte allowed the smile but blinked back the tears. She’d find time to cry later. Right now, she would rejoice. It was a minor miracle that Maddy had asked her to stay. Charlotte would give her as much time as she could. “That sounds good. I don’t have anywhere I need to be, so I can hang around for a little while. Give Will a break. He’s probably tired of you.”

Maddy laughed lightly. “Yeah. I’d say so.”

“I’ll go get that coffee, and you rest up.”

Glancing back at her sister as she headed for the door, Charlotte sent up a silent prayer, thanking God for this opportunity, and asked Him to use it however he could.

Chapter6

Will pacedthe hall with the phone pressed against his face. “I’m glad you called. I’ve been meaning to get in touch.”

“Is anything wrong?”

“Nothing’s wrong, but there’s been a change in Maddison’s situation.”

“What kind of change?”

“Unfortunately, she will be unable to attend the next meeting, but I will still attend on her behalf. She respects Antonio’s time and would not want to delay him when it is unnecessary. Maddison has conveyed her position to me fully, so I can speak on her behalf.”
