“You sound like a Hallmark card. How about you stick to your personal life, and I’ll stick to mine. Now, you got a phone call. Tell me about it.”

“It didn’t go well.”

“It was Antonio?”

“One of his guys, yeah.”

“What’s his problem? He has nothing to complain about. Everything was going perfectly.”

“Maybe too perfectly. He expects us to bow to his command. But the good news is, he has complete confidence in you.”

“Then what’s the problem?”

“He said he wouldn’t meet with me on my own. You have to be there or the deal is off.”

“I thought he might.”

“Did you?”

“He probably thinks you’re trying to start a coup.”

“Personally, I think he wants to have all of your attention. He’d be disappointed to miss a chance to see you.”

“I can’t face him like this. Can you imagine? If I look like a monster, he’ll bail. The doctor thinks my face will be back to normal soon enough.”

“And your legs?”

“I only need my face to be pretty again. He’s not going to care if I have a cast. He’ll probably sign it. We’ll just postpone.”

“I would agree, but I’ve already tried that. He said if we change the time, it’s off.”

“What do you mean, ‘off’?”

“Exactly what it sounds like. The deal’s off. You meet him at the previously agreed-upon time or he’s done.”

She closed her eyes. The puffiness in her forehead refused to crease against the frown.

He put a hand on her arm. “You okay?”

“Not really.”

“You need me to get you more pain meds?”

“No. We need to figure this out, and I can’t do that pumped full of drugs.”

“There’s nothing to figure out. We have no option but to call it off. It’s over.”

“I won’t let that happen. We’ve worked too hard.”

“You and I both know we can’t afford to get caught up in a sunk-cost fallacy. That’s not how this job works.”

“That’s not what this is.”

“We’ve invested a lot, but there’s nothing we can do. We cut our losses and start fresh once you’re better.”

“There is no starting fresh. Not with Antonio. This is our only shot to bring him down. We’ve been after him too long. We can’t give up because of a little hiccup.”

“Little hiccup? You can’t get out of bed, and your face looks like a bloated pizza.”
