“Of course she did. At least she can be a constant reminder of what you used to look like.”
“She looks nothing like me.”
“Not now she doesn’t. Look, Maddy, we have to face the facts. Unless you have some grand scheme for how to salvage this that I, for some reason, cannot see, we have to call it quits. I wanted this to work as much as you did, but all I can see is a dead end. We have no viable way forward.”
“That’s not strictly true. There is one thing we could try.”
“You’re serious? You have an idea? Great. I’m all ears.”
Maddy pressed her lips together. “You’re not going to like it.”
“Let me guess, you want to cut your legs off and get prosthetics, then get a mask of your old face to wear?”
“Hmm…not a bad idea.”
“Yours can’t possibly be worse.”
“In some ways, it’s similar.”
“Sure it is.”
“It is.”
“Well? Spit it out. It’s not like you to hold back.”
“Charlie.”
“Her name’s Charlotte. What about her?”
“You’re the one who said it. EvenIdon’t look like me. She’s the only one in this world who has my face right now.”

“Not swap faces. Swap roles.”
“You—No—You’re kidding, right? That’s not even funny.”

“Then the medication they’ve got you on has made you insane. The doctordidsay you got a concussion.”
“Will, this could work.”
“No, it can’t. She’s a civilian. She’s untrained. Sure, she looks like you, but she isn’t you. There is nothing about her that is the same as you except her face.”
“How do you know? You’ve only just met her.”
“I know you well enough to see it.”
“Antonio doesn’t need me to actually be there. He only needs to see me there to boost his confidence. You can say I have laryngitis or something. I can’t talk myself, so you talk for me. The hardest part is for her to look like me, and she does. It works out for everyone. He’s happy, I’m happy, everybody’s happy.”
“Except Charlotte and me.”
