“You’re speaking for her now?”

“She’s not here to speak for herself, so yes.”

“I don’t see what the big deal is. All we need her for is window dressing. She doesn’t need to do anything. She wouldn’t be in any danger.”

“No? You didn’t read the reports I put together on Antonio when we started this? About all the people he’s murdered.”

“I know what kind of man he is, yes.”

“So what if something goes wrong?”

“Make sure it doesn’t.”

“Maddy.”

“Will. It’s a good idea. Admit it.”

“What’s a good idea?” Charlotte said from the door, coffee and donut in hand. “You still like donuts? I thought you might want a treat to cheer you up. If you’re allowed, that is. Sorry, am I interrupting business talk? I can go and come back later.”

“No, you’re just in time,” Maddy said. “Come in.”

Chapter7

Charlotte entered the room slowly, looking between Will and Maddy. “Did they give you more drugs while I was gone? You seem a lot happier.”

“We solved a problem, so I am happy.”

Charlotte looked at Will, who crossed his arms and scowled toward the window. “It’s not gonna happen.”

Maddy clicked her tongue and said, “Charlie, you asked—”

“It’s Charlotte,” Will said, still facing the window.

“I don’t know why you feel the need to defend her all of the sudden. She’smysister.”

“Someone has to look out for her best interest.”

“I’m sorry,” Charlotte said slowly. “Did I miss something?”

“You asked me before if you could help in any way.”

“I did. Did you think of something?”

“No,” Will said, glaring at Maddy.

“We can at least ask her.”

“Why?”

“Hey, guys,” Charlotte said. “I’m right here. Ask me what?”

Maddy stared down Will and said, “We’d like to know—”

“You’d like to know,” Will said.

“Stop interrupting me. I’m in enough pain as it is. You’re making it worse. I’ve already got a headache coming on.”

“I just want her to understand it’s not my idea.”
