Maddy laughed. “You two kids have fun. I’ll stay here and do nothing. It will be awesome.”

Charlotte sipped on her coffee and read the poster on the wall, then took a bite of the donut without thinking. She looked at it while she chewed. “Oops.” She took another bite. She could always get another.

It had been tempting to listen in at the door, but she figured one or both of them would know she was there. They must have a sixth sense for that stuff doing the work they did.

It was hard to comprehend what Maddy had asked of her. It had only been a couple of days ago that she’d complained to God about her boring life, and now her sister had asked her to go undercover. It sounded exciting, but maybe it was like with her own job and it sounded more interesting than it was. Will might be worried it carried danger, but Maddy would never ask her to do anything that could get her killed. It would probably turn out to be straightforward and uneventful, but it was a chance to step out of her own life for a second and do her sister a favor, maybe opening a door to mending their relationship.

“Charlotte?”

She turned. “Hey, Will. I’m really sorry to make things difficult for you. The last thing I want to do is make you and Maddy mad at each other. But I want to help.”

“I know. And it’s very generous of you to offer.”

“But?”

“And—not but.AndI still think it’s in your best interest to decline. But Maddy doesn’t agree.”

“So there was abut.”

“I guess there was, but I’ve still decided to give you a shot.”

“Really?”

“Yeah. But you’re going to have to work hard. And if at any point I don’t think you’re up to the task, the deal’s off.”

“Okay. Yeah. I would expect nothing less.”

He reached out a hand to shake hers. “Welcome to the team.”

“Thank you. Thank you for letting me try. Can you tell me anything about the job? I don’t have any idea what it is that you’re working on.”

“Drugs and guns.”

“And if everything goes as planned, what is the outcome you’re looking for at the end of this?”

“The idea is to get a lot of drugs and guns off the street and put a very bad man behind bars.”

“And this meeting I’ll go to as Maddy, what’s that for?”

“To solidify our partnership working with a man named Antonio Delgado. We’re working on an agreement to import his product. Most of the negotiations are already in place. It’s just a matter of showing that we’re both still on the same page and looking to move forward. We need you there because he won’t agree to the meeting without Maddison being present, and he’s not willing to change the time. He likes her and needs to see her face.”

“That doesn’t sound too hard.”

“If everything goes as planned, it will be easy.”

She nodded. “That all sounds good. And I really do want to help.”

“I know.” He frowned.

“Will, I understand why you have reservations about working with me, but I know very well that you can’t let fear rule your life. If you’re focused on what could go wrong, then you’ll never do anything.”

“Mm-hmm.”

“Sorry. I must sound like an idiot. I’m not telling you anything you don’t already know.”

“There is one other thing.”
