“Not yet, and I’d like to make a proposition.”

“I’m listening.”

“Can we skip the heels for today? I worked hard last night and got the hang of it, but my feet are killing me. They need a day off.”

“I am so tempted right now to make you wear them.”

“I knew you’d say that.”

“You’re lucky I already have something planned that involves sneakers.”

“Oh. Good. I think.”

“This morning, we’re going to test your fitness levels.”

“Okay. I’m pretty sure I brought something to work out in.”

“No. You need to stick to Maddison’s wardrobe.”

“Why?”

“Because I want you in character as much as possible.”

“You’re going to test if I exercise like her?”

“No. It’s not related. You need to feel comfortable looking like her. I want it be natural for you, and I’m pretty sure you and Maddison wear different gym attire, so this is a perfect opportunity to get used to it.”

“Fine.”

“Good. You’ll continue to train every day after this, but today, I’ll find your edges.”

“Should I be scared?”

“A little.”

“If you want me to fail, I’m sure you’ll find a way.”

“This has nothing to do with that. I need to know how far you can be pushed.”

“My feet hurt. Are you going to make me run?”

“Absolutely.”

“I think I liked the heels better.”

“Too late. Get dressed and meet me in the hotel gym in five.”

“It will take me five minutes just to find clothes to wear.”

“Okay six.”

“I haven’t even—”

“The clock is ticking.”

“But—” The line clicked, and the dial tone hummed, but she didn’t have time to mope.

After giving her feet a quick rub, she stumbled to the closet, ignoring the hanging clothes and going straight for the drawers. Riffling through them in search of a T-shirt and shorts, she came up emptyhanded. There was nothing. Instead, Maddy had a drawer full of crop tops and fancy sports bras.
