“How?”

“I don’t know. Ask her.”

“I don’t want to lie to her.”

“You won’t have to. She doesn’t know anything about this, so she won’t ask.”

“What if she asks me what I’ve been doing during training?”

“Do you have to give her every detail of what you’ve done?”

“No.”

“There you go.”

“But if she asks me directly, I’ll tell her.”

“Charlotte.”

“Do you want me to do this or not?”

“Fine. I guess that will have to do.”

“Good. Is it dangerous?”

“Every job has an element of danger, but this is a walk in the park compared to your visit with Antonio. I don’t expect any trouble.”

They entered a hotel that was clean and tidy but had a dingy air about it and smelled like stale cigarettes.

A man with greasy, slicked-back hair sat behind the counter, eyeballing them. The collar of his shirt was open, exposing a chunky gold necklace. It was almost too stereotypical to believe it was real, and she wondered for a second if this was a setup.

Will pulled Charlotte toward the counter, and she leaned on him as he addressed the man.

“Evening. You Fred?”

“Yeah, why?” He looked the part, but his nasally voice didn’t match his style.

“We’re looking to get a room.”

Fred sniffed. “All night, or…”
